(Wikipedia)   We all know there are bad movies and bad video games. There are plenty of movies that are so bad they're good. Do any video games fall into the "so bad they're good" category? If so, which ones? Link goes to list of bad video games   (en.wikipedia.org) divider line

Watching a bad movie is different than playing a bad game. I can passively watch the movie. As for the game, why would I want to waste time actively engaged in something that's not enjoyable?

I made a game in Basic on the Commodore 64 where you controlled a hot air balloon and another hot air balloon chased you, and you won the game if you made it to the other side of the screen.

Objectively it was an awful game, but I was so happy that it worked.

Deadly Premonition comes to mind first. I'll say that parts of Death Stranding give me that vibe too. Both are so ridiculously bonkers.

Tough because you can't ever call a game good for any reason if it's not fun.

Karma Chameleon: Watching a bad movie is different than playing a bad game. I can passively watch the movie. As for the game, why would I want to waste time actively engaged in something that's not enjoyable?

I think bad games function a bit differently than bad movies. There are more ways a game can go wrong in an interesting way. Of course I find this question when I'm half-asleep.

One is the bad game that is built around some sort of lurid idea, best done with a lot of self-awareness. These are the ones most like bad movies. Looking over the Wikipedia list I see Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, which certainly fits in here. The gameplay is an atrocious choose your own adventure sort of thing. The story is ridiculous, the main characters are dull and poorly acted and most of the visuals are still photographs. It's a bad game. It's also a bad game that doesn't hesitate to take the piss, which does make it entertaining. I enjoyed the awfulness of it in much the same way I do the many, many terrible films that I adore.

Another sort is the experiment that failed. The game isn't good, but it's worth playing to see how the developers had the ambition to try something fresh and different, which makes it interesting or appealing. I'll offer Total Distortion as my example here. I can't in any honesty say that it's a good game. What it does have going for it is that it is absolutely jam-packed full of creative and unusual ideas and things to discover with a creative voice all its own. I recall one of the games magazines at the time replaced its usual score from 1 to 10 for this game with a picture of a fish. It's bizarre.

Finally there are the bad games that become good because they offer something entertaining or amusing. Drumpulous is the first example I can think of here. It has less than five minutes of very simplistic play. Not a good game at all. But it's free and it has you shooting dildos at Donald Trump's head, so in that respect it's pure brilliance.

Hmmm.
Games you put many hours in, but you lose interest and shelve it, seldom coming back?
(UbiSoft games)

Licensed or movie tie in games that have a adequate gameplay loop, but, was rushed to production and
were shipped incomplete and thus rendered quasi playable? (Star Trek Legacy)

Decent niche games that are low tech or maybe not fully polished but still are a blast to play.
(games published by Sandlot Japan, e.g. Earth Defense Force or Robot Alchemic Drive)

Or that old hidden gem on your older machine but still can't get past that level. (Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Felony 11-79/Super Runabout)

/the Ubi  Deus Exwhere I spent hours stealthing around hiding bodies everywhere being unseen, to get
a perfect pacifist non-murdery playthrough, only to have an area where my incapacitation dart was bugged and kept killing an NPC.
//uninstalled, shelved, never came back.

The Assassin's Creed games: Lots of fun gameplay and exploration but the main missions were typically awful to play. Then there was the whole jump at something off screen instead of the thing you were moving toward.

Also, the modern day plotline and game segments always felt like an unwelcome distraction from the game.

That comic explains why it's near impossible to have a "so bad it's good" game. In a game, poor gameplay is frustrating, not funny (unless it's deliberately designed to be so, like surgeon simulator).

Dragon's Lair. While the graphics were excellent the gameplay was horrible and amounted to waiting for something "to flash" and then nudging the joystick in that direction. As a bonus, while all other games were $0.25, DL was $1/play. Four times the cost, 1% of the enjoyment. Pong was more immersive and enjoyable.

I'll also add "Blood and Bacon". It's an indy game so I wasn't expecting Bioshock, but it was absolutely unplayable. The only good thing is that when you posted a negative review on Steam the developers offered you a full refund if you agreed to pull the review.

What counts as a bad game?  Are we talking games like "Ride to Hell: Retribution" or just games that weren't all that great or niche games?

I've enjoyed the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series, Armored Core, Daemon X Machina (soon to be free on Epic), Far Cry 2, and others.

They weren't great games, some had a lot of community complaints, but they were fun for me.

Meh, the gameplay may be dated, but I still think it's a fun game.  Not many games out there let you pee on people, cut their heads off with a shovel, and have a dog fetch it for you.

I agree, the equivalent to warching a bad movie is watching a streamer play a bad video game which can be lots of fun.

Apparently rumors are out there that From's working on a new one.  If they can give us more "megacorp mercenary in a giant robot" goodness, while tightening the gameplay with the lessons about tight gameplay mechanics they've learned from Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro, it could be so incredibly good.

If you mean 'bad' games that are buggy and non-functioning, there's no fun.

But if you mean games that are stupid as hell but still kind of fun, basically any shooter, sidescrolling beat-em-up, final fantasy game higher than 6.

Random trivia about Night Trap:

The whole thing was shot at tv grade years before the mega cd existed. It was being made for a vhs based game console that never made it to market, and the footage just sat for years unused.

It's why the recent re-release was even possible, they had the footage at a far higher quality than people had actually seen already.

I think I'd probably go for the Dynasty Warriors games, or any of the many spin-offs using the same formula.

They're repetitive, the acting is terrible (when you even get an English dub) and most of them are based on stories the west barely even knows.

I love them to bits.

Lastly, I don't know if there is a equivalent to "so bad it's good in gaming".

I think the closest we would come to that would be games I would categorize as "solid 7's".
Not game changing or raising the bar, per se, but not unplayable, just something to pass the time
and not be totally painful. The Blockbuster (or now GamePass) game where you'll rent or download, but are
not going to drop full price on it.
