I have very vague memories of going to the Woolworth diner in the early 80's. I think by 1990 it was shut down.

I used to work part time at Woolworths.
My boss was Mr. McGee
He didn't like "my kind" because I guess I was a bit too leisurely

Up until I was a teen, there was still a VERY old Woolworth store in the town I lived in..A turn of the century building with tin ceiling,a lunch counter, the whole thing...They made THE BEST chocolate shakes and club sandwiches.

My first paying job was at 14. I took  Metrodade bus route #1 from Kendall to Florida City, a buddy jumped on in Cutler Ridge. We would wait at the drug store counter and order bacon cheese omelettes that cost $1. The lime farmer, my buddy's uncle, would pick us up and take to work the groves all day. $3.00/hr.

/good times
//really we got to drive cool tractors and trucks, at 14 y/o.

I remember ordering a BLT at the local Woolworths, and they had to go to the market next door to buy the tomato.  Good times.

Yep, I miss the old lunch counters like that. You'd be hard pressed to find one anymore these days.

I have fond memories as a kid of going to the Woolworth's counter at the local mall. The prices were always reasonable, the portions were never skimpy, and they had the best burger and fries.  My mother would take me as a treat for getting good grades in elementary school, before the entire chain (and subsequently the local store and counter we always went to) went out of business.

Oh, and more CSB: To this day, about 75% of the all the Christmas decorations and ornaments they have in their house (which they still use) are from Woolworth's...

But what about the last Howard Johnson's restaurant? Is that still open?

2022-01-26 9:22:18 AM
My wife worked at the lunch counter at our local Woolworth. The manager used to insist that the waitresses had their pockets sewed up and all tips were to be put in a tin box that only he had the key to and on Friday he would open it and distribute the money.
They used to have a contest when you bought a sundae you could throw a dart at a balloon and you paid whatever was inside the balloon. Her way of getting even was putting one Penny prizes in all the balloons. She told me to pop her balloon.

There's a Woolworth near me (Germany).

I don't know how though. It seems like I have memories of Woolworths having going-out-of-business sales since the 1980s (in the US).

The woolworths here was closed before I was born. We still had a McCroys with a lunch counter and my mom would take us there for lunch as a treat.

/still remember when we ordered dessert first then we ordered our meal

The place was at least half full, so the service at that particular location must have been pretty good. Those four gentlemen don't look are particularly upset over the waiting time. They probably had a delicious meal and enjoyed the experience.

It's interesting that lady on the right side of the photo with the grey shirt and black shorts is the only person using her mobile phone. Today, almost everyone is on them at the mall.

There's still a family owned drug store here that has a lunch counter, with the classic stools.
And a 60 year old grill that makes magical hamburger and grill cheese.
And one of those green milkshake machines. Also the owner (now dead and gone) had a collection of civil war era guns mounted on wood paneling in the section with booths. (I think they, the kids, removed the guns and stuffed birds tho)

The place still gets high marks in the burger in town surveys.

I would rather eat at one of those than any fast food burger joint.  I love that atmosphere and of course the service and the food. and a nice freshly made chocolate malted milk shake.

It would always be my first choice for lunch.

I also have a fondness for a classic diner too, I've written songs about my favorite diner and of course a few songs about Waffle House too.

Back in the 50's sock hops were dances the teens would frequent. Usually at schools or churches.

Just another name for a dance party.

At one point, the refurbished the space in our Union Station where the Harvey House diner was, and ran it under that name.  It was a good bit of nostalgia, but had issues and ended up closing.  Still, fun while it lasted....

I'll have to ask my parents about that. They were teens in the 50's.

All the old photos I saw in reference to sock hops, everyone had shoes on.

so, it's a conundrum to me.

there's one of these left open. Somewhere in Oregon. Good documentary about it too. Saw it on Netflix.
