Nirvana were playing European festivals and getting some tv coverage before this article claims they were "discovered". Sonic Youth are a great band, not bagging Kim Gordon out in the slightest, but a very silly bit in the article.

The story I like about a band being discovered is the one where The Violent Femmes were busking to a crowd waiting to get into a Pretenders concert, the Pretenders came to check them out and signed them up as an opening act for some shows.

Kamelot had Simone Simons on as a guest vocalist in 2004, before she went on to form Epica... which took their name from a Kamelot album.  In 2012, they had a song with Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz.  Elize went on to found Amaranth, and Alissa is best known for being in Arch Enemy now.

More recently, Kamelot has had Jennifer Haben of Beyond The Black, and Lauren Hart of Once Human.   They're not big yet, but I think they're going to be.

Story goes that back in 1967, Long John Baldry was at a train station late at night in London after a Saturday gig.  On the other side was a young man singing to himself.  After a few minutes Landry, impressed by what he heard, called out and asked him if he wanted a tryout at John's next show.  The young man said yes and would go on to join the band.  It was Rod Stewart.

Yeah how do you "discover" a band by seeing their video on MTV?  Pretty sure at that point they were already found.

You can also credit The Beatles with Badfinger. Via George (I think) they signed with Apple Records and Paul wrote their first hit, Come and Get It.

Kiss did tour with Rush a lot in the early days. At that time they were at about the same level of popularity.

Also, both broke through with their fourth albums, Alive and 2112 respectively.

But saying Kiss discovered Rush is as wrong as saying Rush discovered Kiss.

Badfinger was a great band who I sadly didn't know anything about until Baby Blue was a part of Breaking Bad, but their story is about as tragic as it gets.

I mmmmmmmmmmmmmight have seen Tupac with DU....I saw a triple (actually, quadruple) bill of Kid N Play, Big Daddy Kane, Digital, and PUBLIC ENEMY (in that order, as I recall) at he Phoenix Memorial Coliseum around 1988, 1989ish.   I learned just a few years ago, Tupac was a dancer that would occasionally get to spit a rhyme or two, and I flashed back to seeing DU's set and recall they had, in addition to the 6-7 "band" members, a good 4-5 dancers, all who as I recall, took a few turns at the mic.  so yeah.

Sgt Otter: Siouxsie Sioux kicked two future Rock & Roll Hall of Famers out of The Banshees.

no.....the first Siouxsie Sioux iteration, the guitarist and drummer quit days before a tour, and friend of the band Robert Smith offered to play guitar.  He'd later leave the band to reutrn to his Cure duties but no, she did not kick out Robert Smith.  Qutie the opposite - he came to her rescue.

Tears for Fears, or Roland and Curt, were in KC staying at the Hyatt when resident performer Oleta Adams was singing. She was asked to sing on "The Seeds of Love" album and then had her own solo career as a result.

The Band had been around a while but really gained notice after backing Bob Dylan when he went electric.

Rick James (yeah that one) told a story of going AWOL, and instead of hopping on a bus to I think NYC, he went from Buffalo to Toronto.  No interest in going to Vietnam.

Gets off the bus in uniform, a guitar, and a seabag, and 3-4 Canadians at the bus stop, who'd see dozens and dozens of sailors go AWOL, start harassing James, racial epithets, and soon fists start flying.  James is fighting off these guys, and sees two other White guys running over, and thinks, "shiat!  now I gotta fight 5-6 motherfarkers?"

These two side with Rick, and they dispatch the first batch of Canadians.

One guy reaches out his hand to James.  "My name's Levon.  I don't much care to see people beatin' on someone for no good reason.  This here is Rick.  So, you play guitar?"

a dazed James:  "yeah....I play everything.  guitar, piano, a little trumpet, bass."

"Well hell, son, we got us a band too!  You come stay with us.  And, we got us a friend, Neil, he's lookin' for a bass player."

Narrator:2-3 years later, Neil Young and Rick James, as "The Mynah Birds", move to LA and strike out.  Which later led to Neil meeting Stephen Stills and a few other guys.....

Butch Vig lists this song as being among the finest he's ever produced. Yeah it's noise but doesn't mean it's not beautiful. As with all music it's not for everybody but I'm comfortable claiming nobody else can make white noise guitar thrashing sound as beautiful as this.
