Ok that's sounds like deal. Bonus is Russia acknowledging they will be kicked out of SWIFT if they continue their attack on the Ukraine.

2022-01-25 5:35:49 PM
And now you know why Germany doesn't want Russia booted from SWIFT.

Nord stream isn't even  operational yet. Making Russians just eat the roughly $22 billion  cost and never have any NG flow would be kinda humorous.

Also why Russia is doing this in winter.

Great.  Who else are they going to sell to?  They need the cash.

2022-01-25 5:55:44 PM
Yeah, I wonder how that will turn out for them in the long run.

If Germany is threatened with economic pressure I'm confident they can handle it. You don't threaten the biggest guy on the block.

While a fuel shortage is painful, it's a temporary pain compared to letting Russia annex Ukraine, which is a permanent pain.

Not when ~50% of their hydrocarbon imports are at stake.

That would be a devastating economic hit if it were to befall Germany.

And that's just Germany. Not to mention the rest of the EU who also buy Russian gas.

Precisely

Russia cannot just start selling this shiat to anyone else. Their market is in Europe. It would have devastating economic effects on Russia.

Which is perhaps why the US and Canuckistan are looking to shore that up a bit.

Of course, Russia, which is already suffering fairly badly to the point that their entire stock market is worth a li'l less than Apple, would then see a free fall for sales. China won't buy their gas. They are literally threatening their lifeline of foreign cash, and their oligarchs aren't exactly going to give back what they've stolen already, so...wat do, Vlad? Posture a bit more? Threaten? Cajole? Your word was already moot, so continue to jabber, because you dithered a long while before pulling the trigger on this invasion, hoping that Donnie would cover your ass and give you a free pass, and now you've got a whole new guy to deal with, who isn't buying your malarkey.

Trolling Germany into shutting down all their nuclear plants was almost as masterful as trolling America into electing Donald Trump as President.

I hate Putin as much as anyone, but... game recognizes game.

Why do Twitter threads about any global development devolve into cryptocurrency arguments so much?

Allowing Russia to implode and back itself further into a corner can have no positive outcomes. You can talk big all you want, but as a friend of someone in long range reconnaissance whose job it was to secure nuclear arsenal after the fall of the Soviet Union, that shiat was crazy. You had a bunch of factions who controlled nuclear weapons without any sort or central power to regulate them.

What other alternative is there?

Their leader is a stone psychopath consumed with delusions of rebuilding the USSR (that would be hilarious if he weren't serious), who has overseen the perversion of Russia into an international crime syndicate masquerading as a legitimate nation, and who lives in an absolutely zero-sum world view where he actually believes that by shiatting up the rest of the world this somehow makes the living nightmare he presides over in Russia "better."

They shut down half of them last month, evidently forgetting that their solar panels only work well during the summer months.

IIRC, Germany just shut down several nuclear plants. Seems like they could restart those pretty quickly.

It demonstrates the extent to which Russia's moves are purely about Putin's short-term political needs, because using gas as a pressure point is absolutely catastrophic for Russia long-term. Europe can, over time, transition away from Russian LNG in the face of Putin's aggression; Russia doesn't have good options to keep their economy afloat absent European markets, unless it's becoming a client state of China.

Wow, it almost seems like a good thing that the Biden administration has been spending the past few months ensuring that fuel exports to Europe have been pretty drastically increased. It's almost like the Biden administration knew that this would be an issue and took steps to mitigate the impending damage.

Fine. I'll move my bed and desk to my living room, close off both bedrooms, wear another sweatshirt, light a few candles, and do a few jumping jacks every hour. My two neighbours above and below also work from home, so we can all work in my living room to save heat during the day. Depending on Russia for anything is just as shortsighted as depending on the US or China. It's time to put all three of those toddlers in a time-out.
