Fark.

Well that's it for the Saints, for real now.

It was a rather fun run.

Peter von Nostrand: He seems smarter than that.

He's facing -$78 million dollar cap, and has few pieces to build around. They can keep kicking the cap down the road, but eventually they'll have to face the music. I have a feeling it will be sooner rather than later.

Multiple outlets are saying he is under contract through 2024, so apparently - and I don't know how different the rules for coaches are vs players - another team would, per report(s) have to trade draft picks to get him.

evolving story - Jim Rome just quoted a Tweet saying he is not retiring, but takinga  year off.  yet other outlets are saying he is retiring, but then those same outlets say what i just posted, re "he's Saints property through 2024 and teams must trade to get him."  very strange.

There have been rumors about him going to broadcasting for a while. Aikman is apparently going to Amazon, and Fox has been trying to recruit Payton to replace him.

It's similar to the situation with Arians and Cardinals. Bucs sent a 6th rounder in exchange for Arians and a 7th rounder.

which means a team would have to offer the Saints a bounty......

There had been a rumor that Pace was trying to keep his GM job by claiming he could land Payton.

Yep. Don't get me wrong they, they can get out from under it, but doing so further mortgages their future and they have been doing it for years already. Hell, this year alone they moved $100 million around. The problem is that by converting all these bonuses to signing bonuses is that you only have 5 years to spread it out. Given that they have already done that many times, they are just digging a deeper hole.

I still like that fully voidable fake years contract they gave Taysom Hill. The media kept on reporting the numbers as if they were real. Because I'm childish, I'd have seen how far I could push the fake numbers before the media balked.

Do you think they would have believed $60 million a year?

It won't be long before someone gets a "multi" "billion" "dollar" "contract" which pays $10 mil for one year.

Forgot about that.  And I'm pretty sure Gruden was traded to Tampa back in the day.

And Arians...I've said this for years.  you could argue when he retired from AZ, that the team could have fired him.  His teams had regressed from I think 14-2 (playoff lost to the Panthers), to I think 8-8 his final year.  I'm not saying he should have been fired, but we were regressing.

So.

His retriement press conference.  Tears.  "My team has known for months I've been fighting cancer and, it never got out, that's how much love they had for me and me for them."

He said something like, "I want to thank the organization for giving my first and last chance to be a head coach.  I've been playing or coaching organized football for 4X years.  I've missed weddings, funerals, births, first days of school, proms, Thanksgivings, Christmases, you name it.  I'm done.  Tme for me to a full-time husband, father, and grandfather."

one year later he's on TV.

One year later he's back on the sidelines.

2 years later no sign of him slowing down.

It's how he got off the opioids he was stealing from the team facility, which is the real reason the NFL suspended him. Or were we supposed to believe that Gregg Williams was the only DC out there with a bounty program?

I remember when Payton first signed as the HC for the Saints. When I saw him on TV the first thing I thought was "I know this guy from somewhere" but just couldn't put my finger on it. So, a few years ago, I finally figured out where I knew him from, and it was all thanks to Tony Freakin Romo.

A few years back, I think it was CBS, was having this whole big to do over Romo being inducted into the Eastern Illinois Sports Hall of Fame. So they were going on about some of the big names that went there, and one of those names was Sean Payton. So they started talking about how Payton played QB there and while he was there the offense was nicknamed Eastern Airlines. Then they went on about him playing for the Bears during the strike season. And that is when I realized where I knew him from. Back when I was in HS, one of my football coaches was a WR at Eastern Illinois and he also played for the Bears during the strike season. My freshman year in HS, during our two a day practices, Payton would come and hangout and watch practice sometimes waiting for him.

And just to think, I would not have figured this out if it wasn't for CBS being all in Romo's ass

I rememeber a game, 2000, 2003 or so, when the Giants were playing the Cardinals - we were right outside the stadium - and the Giants did something stupid that lost them the game.

Jim Fassel a day later blamed his OC - Payton - for whatever happened.  then 2-3, whatever, years later he surfaced as the Saints coach.  "Oh, the guy the HC threw under the bus for the debacle at Sun Devil.  Hunh."

and while cleared, technically, as I recall, by  Bountygate, no way he didn't know.  the Guy Who Prepares For Everything, didn't know?  fark that shiat.

LOL... Hey, you guys had a good run, got a Super bowl... gonna be awhile.

I got no hard feelings for Sean. He was the best Saints coach ever and gave a helluva lot  in return before and after he got paid for many years.

Sean likes control of things (so does the Saints GM so the new coach will need to be strong enough to make that a partnership not a dictatorship). Since Sean is a bit of a control freak and has worked for Jerry Jones before I dont think it would be a good match. I think he might try his hand in the broadcasting booth after the dust settles though.

Who do I want for the next Saints coach?

Dennis Allen works for me until the Saints find a real quarterback, which might take years.

I also wouldnt mind if the Saints are the team that finally takes Eric Bieniemy, but only if Bienemy is enough of a hard ass to deal with Mickey Loomis

Yes, but the rest of the NFC South wont look so hot either once Tom Brady retires. With some luck getting at least a game manager quarterback I could see the Saints could contend for their division in three years (not a superbowl)without even putting on my Polly Anna hopeful sunglasses.

So now we just wait for Mike McCarthy to shot himself in the foot by going 8-9 next year and Jerruh fires him?

The only thing the Saints have going for them in a great defense. Offensively, they are just sad. I love me some Taysom, but a running/gadget QB with a lisfranc injury? We won't be seeing him until November. Winston wasn't terrible and could actually get the ball downfield, but without Payton, I just don't know. Michael Thomas will have to go somewhere else. Kamara is awesome, but I don't see him wanting to toil away on a rebuilding team.

It's not looking good for the Saints. I became a fan in the early nineties while attending Tulane, so I've seen some lean years. I have a bad feeling, we might be in for some of those again.

It's very difficult to be as successful as you were for so long, it's just cyclical because it takes so long to build a team up to be good for yeas on end. You'll all be back, especially with your division the way it is.

I thought I was the only one that held on to that possibility. I looked into it a while back and the team did reach a settlement with the guy making the allegation.

I hear that Urban Meyer is available. And that he's got a hot shot mobile qb that can electrify crowds for cheap.

It's not like there's any nightlife in New Orleans that would be cause for distraction right?

That is definitely big news.

I think, like others have said already, that the Saints will be mediocre at best now...obviously depends on how their salary cap works out along with what coach they get to replace him.
