(Some Guy)   Subby's wife used to work for these big-box masquerading as a coop farkers. Their handling of the pandemic was trash. Here's hoping this unionizing picks up traction across more REI stores   (truthout.org) divider line

Oh. Co-op. You mean co-op. I was trying to understand this headline originally using the word "coop" and imagining a big box being used as a chicken house in some way, but then was having significant trouble relating that to the rest of the headline.

Yeah, REI is not a co-op. Tell us something new

"Keep on farking that coop" doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?  No, best stick with calling someone a chicken farker when they fark a chicken. At least then you know they're chicken farkers.

It actually caused me to originally misread it as coop farmers.

Company that touts its progressive values turns out to actually be anti-union capitalist sh*tbag liars.

Tale as old as time.

It's properly spelled coöp.

I am curious what the REI in that area did to handle the pandemic like "trash." I haven't had reason to shop recently, but driving through the shopping center with an REI in the parking lot  near me I have seen they have contact less pick up spaces. Is it a lack of sick time? Refusing to enforce masking?

Probably the same as every other retail company during the pandemic that stayed open with "essential" business. Told employees to come to work and then did nothing to enforce customer masking, probably didn't give any paid sick time for COVID cases, etc.

I worked for them right out of college 20+ years ago. Raises were based on how many memberships you sold. We were a two floor store so the vultures downstairs would have already given people the "talk" and they had the slip with that employees number on it before they even got to my section. In the winter I worked in the ski department and could push $3-4k of skis and boots out the door on a good day, spend an hour fitting boots, etc. None of that was factored in to their compensation schedule.
I did make some good lifelong friends, have some hilarious stories about customers, and sold a guy a sleeping  bag who had me working in major market radio 4 days later, so it wasn't all bad.

Also, I should point out that REI doesn't pay taxes on the membership fees, so there's a huge corporate push on those.

I miss the days when MEC was a co-op. Now it's just another corporate piece of shiat.

Our REI was and is pretty strict with masking.  When they first opened up to in-person shopping they also enforced a person limit to allow for distancing.  Maybe it's just our local story in Libby Libby Oregon.

Honestly their bike brand pisses me off.  People have this impression that they make great bikes and the reality is that they're just decent.  Granted they are way more serviceable than box store bikes, and they're put together by mechanics, but people will think they bought a mountain bike to hit trails with when in reality their bike is more of a easy gravel road bike.

Literally everything in America is anti-union. Hell, multiple unions in America are anti-union... at least anti-other people's unions. Hell, most of America's labor class is anti-union. There's no need to single out companies that tout progressive values, it's literally all of America.

Buyer co-op not worker co-op. Big difference.
