Putin has pretty much ramped the Warmongering up to 11. Now it's schit or get off the pot. If he does invade Ukraine, it will be his death knell. His own people are sick of his poor leadership. They know what he's about which is Kleptocracying. The average Russian knows all about it, as do the Ukrainians, the Belarusians, and even the Kazakhs.  The whole world will have had it with his stupid schit, period.

Oh, and his Conscript army is deeply demoralized because they like Ukraines like brothers. There may be a lot of mercenaries, but I doubt they would stand up to a widespread mutiny  like happened to the last Tsar, before they got complete dubbed Enemies of the Russian People and torn from limb to limb.

The fun thing about Russia possibly making a power-play on Ukraine to prevent further NATO expansion (its not even on the table), is that if they do, both Finland and Sweden will accelerate their application to join NATO  - based on Russian belligerence in Ukraine.

What's a new 800 km border full of cruise missiles, amirite, Vladdy? 400km from St Petersburg, no less.

Russia is running on a clock if they want to do anything more than a tank parade in an already-occupied Donetsk. Putin's key point of leverage versus crippling sanctions that will come with an invasion is constraining the gas supply to Europe during the dead of winter. They could wait for next winter, but every month that goes by means they will be fighting an increasingly prepared enemy armed with more American military hardware.

Imagine a multinational project to get Europe a different source of heating fuel so they can get off Russia's teat.  I'd throw in my buck o five.

If war were imminent, you'd start seeing buildings commandeered, machine gun nests established, concrete blocks placed across roadways, explosive charges set on bridges, strict controls on entry/exit from controlled zones, nighttime blackouts, the works.

The fact that none of this is happening in Kyiv tells us either a) the Ukrainian government doesn't believe an attack is imminent, and/or b) the Ukrainian government is woefully unprepared for war.

Just for info I decided to check into the Ukrainian air force to see what kind of hardware they have...Approximately 120 planes in total, and all of them are old Soviet-era MiGs and Sukhois. Yeah, they're farked.

I guess you don't mind warmonger penalties? I always turn off domination as a winning condition. The goal of the game shouldn't be war for war's sake; I view war as something that should be used only as a tactical measure of last resort, whether it's to open up trade routes, to force acceptance of a new religion, or to expand colonial sites.

Generally speaking, the only time I destroy another civilisation entirely is if they declare war on me first. After all, insolence must be punished.

Anthony Blinken is a pro-Israel hardliner who is relently pushing for war against Russia in order to prevent them from installing pro-Russian government that would interfere with Israel-Ukraine's recent developed ties so maybe he is the one who needs to calm down mmkay.

I would like someone to explain this to me. They say it's untenable for Ukraine to join NATO because it shares a 1,900 km land border with Russia. If Russia annexes Ukraine, then the newly formed Russia-Ukraine state will have about 1,400 km of land borders (combined) with Romania, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, which are all NATO members. What is the strategic advantage of reducing the NATO border length by 500 km?

I need to play on harder difficulties, because usually my surprise war is only done after a different civilization has put a city near a resource I need and the grievance penalties (warmonger got replaced by grievances in Civ 6, Gathering Storm) don't hurt my civilization as much as it should.

Right now I am nearing the end of the game where I was pretty much the bad guy throughout, militarily took two city-states in the opening turns before a World Congress was formed, wiped out a civilization on my continent after I declared a protectorate war after that civ declared war on one of my suzerains, then I used various casus belli to declare war on the other powers (one religious war because they converted one of my cities away from Islam :-P, the other was a colonial war that got me a war with an addition civ because I didn't bother to check that they had an alliance with the other power) and now I have two cities left to conquer with one that immediately started in rebellion because the final Civ tried to start a new city in desperation, but too close to two of my cities. I am awaiting the new city to rebel and have Giant Death Robots ready to take the last city.

/Sean Bean is nice to listen to, but I still miss Leonard Nimoy's voice from Civ 4.

it's what he's trying to pull off, anyways -- as if the previous 30 years never happened, as if places like Ukraine never developed their own autonomy  - as if James Baker actually formally committed to never see NATO expand.

It's all gaslighting and revisionism that he may try to enforce with military power

Almost every war the USA has entered was entered against the wishes of the American people. During the Cold War the KGB believed that the USA was not a democracy and did not have legitimate elections. At least half of that is empirically true. There is zero detectable effect of public opinion among the non-wealthy on the decisions of the US federal government.
