Florida gets a bad rap. They need a slogan.
You know, like "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania."

How about, "The best chums are in Florida!"

"scour media reports for news of shark bites"

Seems legit. I'm sure that a rural Zambezi River bull shark attack is just as widely covered in the media as a Boston banker tripping over a nurse shark on Daytona Beach.

Kitesurfer Stephen Shafer, 38, of Stuart, was the most recent victim of an unprovoked and fatal shark bite in Florida. He was kite surfing Feb. 3, 2010, when he was accidentally bitten on the thigh by a suspected bull shark and died of severe blood loss.

Sure, just like I accidentally pummeled a whole pizza by myself yesterday.

I know many of you were told by your grandparents and possibly parents not to trust brown sharks and to lock your boat doors when going by sandbars, but they're some of the nicest sharks in the ocean.  One bumped into me once and apologized.

When asked for comment, a shark spokesfish said, "look, whose fault is it that most of you Americans are indistinguishable from a walrus when you're in the water?"

I think we need to know the definition of "unprovoked".

After all, in some states in the US, "provoked" means as little as "walked on my property" or "looked at me in a way I didn't like".

Maybe the sharks have learned enough about humans to feel the same way.

"Provoked attacks" occur when a human initiates interaction with a shark in some way, including spearfishers, divers that harassed or tried to touch sharks, people that tried to feed, unhook or remove sharks from a fishing net.

You could have just said "Florida"

17 out of 48 actually seems low to me considering how much beach and how many beachgoers Florida has year round.  Except for Hawaii and far south Texas, no one is going in the water in the winter on most US beaches.

In fact, this site shows Florida having a large majority of all US attacks since 1837.  Top states:

Texas   44
North Carolina    76
South Carolina   111
California   132
Hawaii   182
Florida    896

The real question is why so many attacks in the Carolinas?  I'm suspecting it's BBQ related.
