The "live action" Disney adaptations are like 75% CGI. The dwarves will probably be computer generated. I don't know if that more or less offensive.

Look if they can make John Rhys-Davies "Gimili" in Lord of the Rings and pull that off .... yup that's fine. And he was excellent in that BTW.

There's a treatment now for 'little people' in a generation or so there will be very few 'little people' as more treatments become approved.

What about all the "little people" actors who can't get work because Dinklage is all "fark you, I got mine".

I guess they don't have to make the dwarfs small.  Elves were small until Tolkein made them tall and majestic. They could do the same to the dwarfs.

I know the Tolkien books were iconic with nerds but the Snow White movie's been around for decades. People would be pissed at tall dwarfs. Plus Disney would have to change all their merchandise.

No, Dinklage. He might not make the decisions but if was up to him, he had an entire series and he wants to begrudge other little people from getting work.

But Rhys-Davies denied an actor with dwarfism a role they could do. How has Dinklage done that?

Davies was cast in the role, it wasn't his decision, they just would have gotten someone else. Dinklage is saying they shouldn't put little people in Snow White even though he made a ton of money on GoT.

2022-01-24 10:17:20 PM
I get his point - if you're going to make the princess different, then make the slaves someone different. Why dwarves? Why not just a random group of men, short and tall?

Like, if you're going to re-do the fairy tale, re-do the fairy tale. Don't half-ass it.

Jackson chose to do LOTR with a bunch of forced perspective and all that.

He could have hired a bunch of actors with dwarfism, but chose not to.

Dinklage is saying they shouldn't put little people in Snow White even though he made a ton of money on GoT.

From TFA, Dinklage is saying it's farked up that they want to put a bunch of actors with dwarfism in a cave and try to celebrate the diversity of the project by saying their lead actor is Latina.

It's a bit farked up that dwarfism was better represented in the 1970s, when Kenny Baker was artoo and Warwick Davies was Wicket, but these days, it's better to do it in post.

2022-01-24 11:43:12 PM
Well dude... I'm just going to throw it out there that while Disney is only as sensitive as the box office requires, the dwarves in Snow White are probably not supposed to be humans with dwarfism, but caricatures of typical fantasy dwarves from Germanic tradition.  That's why they're in the caves - they're mining, which is what Germanic dwarves do.

Sure, they likely were inspired by people with dwarfism long ago, but they're their own thing now, just like elves may have been inspired by people with Williams syndrome.

2022-01-24 11:44:37 PM
You can have your dwarves, but one of them has to be a six foot tall ginger.

2022-01-24 11:54:16 PM
Peter Dinklage is a very good looking man. If he was offered a roll, she end up hooking up with him as the love interest over prince charming. He is that good looking regardless of his height.

2022-01-24 11:54:36 PM

Mugato: What about all the "little people" actors who can't get work because Dinklage is all "fark you, I got mine".

The truth is that Dinklage is supremely lucky in the lack of deformity his dwarfism has brought him - he's a good looking guy and he can walk normally.  This is rarely true with dwarfism, and unless you're actually trying to portray humans with dwarfism... it's better to use camera tricks than hire little people to play fantasy dwarves and we're good enough with the required technology and techniques that this is now how it's done.

In other words, it's perfectly reasonable that having dwarfism should more or less lock you out of acting unless you happen to be good enough that they'll adapt the writing to you a bit.  Because you simply can't ignore the condition in most cases, it has an affect on your life and on what you could bring to a role.  Anything athletic is out - and how many parts NEVER involve a bit of running or climbing or trying to look over a crowd or whatever?  It's the same thing that keeps paraplegics out of all but the rare supporting role.  Or the elderly.

If you're not youngish, more or less physically normal, and usually at least a bit above average in looks according to the cultural standards of your market, it ain't happening.

Not quite.  Tolkien draws more from the Germanic folklore elves rather than the Celtic.  Well, more of a blending of the two.  Celtic elves live in forests and like bows but are mostly little assholes.  In Germanic, the Ljosalfar, or light elves, are tall and blond and swift and act as messengers of the Gods, basically angels or even akin to minor gods.  So, he put them in the setting of the Celtic elves, and gave the elf character a bow, but the appearance and lore behind them is very Germanic.  Then he used the svartalfar, or black elves, as the dwarves, as they live underground, are greedy, and are great craftsmen.

If Snow White can be Latino, I see no reason the 7 dwarfs can't be tall.

Probably because the real defining quality of Snow White was that she is the fairest of them all which could be any race.   But a dwarf is a mythological race with distinguishing characteristics.   I did not read D&D novels picturing Warwick Davis as a smaller than human bearded warrior with an age.   Now, if they do it as a modern day tale and Snow White is in an apartment with seven little persons equating them as dwarves, I would sympathize with his feelings and be disappointed if it did not give me memories of Under the Rainbow.  About as silly as the stink that drow elves got being dark skinned and evil being said to be indicative of black people just because the skin color matches without having any other personality or stereotypical characteristics being shared.   This is fantasy, people.
