Who'd have thought that making Galt's Gulch the video game wouldn't work out, and the majority of people don't want a second job to play a game?

MMORPG

Is that still a thing?

I though about just posting a quick bullet-point list of how things went south so quickly, but there was/is so much wrong with the game, I'd have to go into a whole thing to describe it all, and it's late.

Maybe I'll post tomorrow if I care enough.

amazon has had a rough entry into vidja game development, new world could see all the pitfalls of mmos and instead of learning from them decided to set up camp and live in them.

Unless an MMO comes out that completely redefines the genre, any new one is only going to see an initial popularity as people check it out only to quickly become a ghost town after they've done so. MMO's are by their very nature huge timesinks that require a lot of dedication. Anybody who wants to play an MMO already has one they've put insane hours and money into and aren't going to readily start over.

Mine is ESO. Couple thousand hours of playtime and I've spent more on furniture for my virtual house than I have on my actual furniture in the real world. Gonna be real hard to convince me to jump ship after all that. I imagine most hardcore MMO players are in the same boat on their chosen game.

EVE online is still a thing, right?

EVE Online appeals to the firefly/star trek/expanse nerds out there, and there's not umpteen Sci Fi MMORPGs out there in space.

Kind of like how "The Secret World" is super interesting until you get into the end game and realize Funcom just stopped with it completely.

Personally, my fun game is FFXIV. It's the story and art that sells it for me.

Sure it is. Even City of Heroes has resurfaced.

Aww, man. I had completely forgotten about that game. Some very cool ideas there, but very much a "okay, now what." at the end. At least Wildstar had a plan for endgame, even if the plan...wasn't well executed.

FFXIV is great, though. I did skip up and buy my way to Shadowbringers, though, after the slog of ARR. But the story was great in SB and EW that I ended up watching way more of the cutscenes than I intended. Now I just need to find a decent savage group to see the endgame stuff, even if I have to tank to do it.

I'm sorry but I'm not playing the MMO that's known to fry high end graphics cards every now and then.

I think Amazon has their fingers in that Lost Ark game let's see how that goes...will it be 3 out of 3?
Probably not I think it already has a following

This.  Sales and surge are the 'ooh shiny'.  Games will get patched, issues will get fixed, but players will return to their original timesinks.

Same, I don't like it when my PC catches fire.

the real deal turned out to not be related to this specific game at all, it was a specific run of cards, and this woudl a happened to any of them in whatever higher end game.
just the timing was that game was the new hottness of the moment, seeing more light than others.

not played the game myself at all, not defending the game here, just being sure the not true news you were repeating got an update.

And as someone else noted already, MMOs are typically time sink grindy time investments, and a saturated market. So you can't exactly put out a new one and expect to retain a large player base. They are just seeing what's new her, but will be drawn back to their established and far more bass self in that other MMO, than go  back to being a low stack order nobody starting all the grindy time over from scratch again.

Because it was the first game to stress those defective graphics cards doesn't make it the game's fault when the graphics card failed.
