Why are Lions fans laughing? Stafford leaving was a pretty amicable divorce from both sides

Yeah and Goff took a far worse Rams team than they have this year to the Super Bowl.

Unless Stafford does better than that? Well... okay, we can make fun of Lions fans regardless. But let's not anoint St. Stafford yet.

Having to watch him play the Bears twice a year, I always thought he would have looked great in a Bears uniform.

It's unusual for a Hall-of-Fame level Lions player to leave for another team at the peak of his career.

The general pattern is to simply quit the game entirely rather than continue to play for Detroit.

He didn't leave, he was traded to Pittsburgh.

Not to put words in Ishkurs mouth, but I believe the idea is more recent HoF lions, e.g. barry and calvin

I grew up in MI as a Steelers fan because the Lions sucked and I was watching Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swan, Mean Joe Green, Franco Harris, and the rest of the team put a beating on everyone they played. (I don't remember scored, just that Pittsburg won 4 superb owls before I was 10.
I pulled for the Lions, but knew better than to get invested.
I really wanted Billy Simms, Barry Sanders, and now Stafford to have success.
Now Stafford has a real chance.

I hope some day that the Lions can overcome their mismanagement and be successful, but don't put too much time into that hope.

Subby here and THIS times a google plex!

I was sooo glad Stafford got the hell out of the sewer that is the Detroit Lions! I have been rooting for him all season and I'm very please that he has finally gotten the 'Can't Win The Big Game' off his back!

/Hope he wins the Super Bowl.

Yes, this is the correct answer.

I deliberately didn't namedrop to see who would pick up on that.

There are 4 cat teams in the NFL.
The Bengals are on their way to the AFCCG.
The other 3 are a combined 11-39-1.

Most are - but many were Stafford haters who blamed all of the losing while he was here on Stafford.  He's checked off every box - "can't win against a good team", "can't win a playoff game", "chokes in big moments".

He's proven to all the haters that (for the most part) he was the difference in the Lions being a perpetual 2-14 team vs dragging them along to 9-7 and occasionally making the playoffs.

I think the real problems w/the Lions is their management. Wrong people are in charge and it doesn't look like the changes made in 2020 have worked. May be too soon to tell, but we will see over the next several years.

Well, one could argue a lot of that was Caldwell, and your owners looking for the Great White Hope as coach kinda ruined everything.

Stafford is 0 - 2 against the 49ers this year.

Firing Caldwell because he *didn't* make the playoffs with the dregs the upper management gave him to surround Stafford with was the most Lions-like thing they could have done. They miss the playoffs by *one* game and they fire him... and the Lions then proceed to return to the norm for the Lions.

More fun:

Matt Stafford is the only QB remaining to not have thrown an INT this postseason.

Jimmy Garappolo is the only QB remaining to not have thrown a TD this postseason.

More fun facts:

Jimmy Garappolo has a 5-1 postseason record averaging less than 150 yards passing/game and having thrown 2 TD and 5 INT in those games.

It's incredible how bad he is, yet he keeps winning.

2022-01-24 8:11:42 PM
But please let Garappolo make the SB with another game of 150 or so yards, 0 TD, 1 INT.

It's my dream that he gets named SB MVP after a playoff run where he produces zero offensive scores.

As a Packer fan I hoped for Stafford to have success in LA.  A QB that could have done a lot elsewhere got saddled in Detroit.  I was hoping for a Stafford or Dallas vs. GB NFC Championship.  Good storyline.

This.

The Lions will never become a dynasty as long as the Ford family owns the team and people keep filling the seats at Ford Field.

The Packers get bounced out of the Playoffs was a great storyline.

I can see that, but the "former Lions QB against the Packers" or "former Packer coach looks to avenge his firing" would be more interesting to me.

Thankfully, that idiot owner isn't in charge of the team anymore.

Sheila has owned the team for 2 years. It isn't fair to saddle her with her father's idiocy.

and she looks genuinely excited for the team.  I remember that draft video where she was sitting next to the new GM asking him 'what are we going to do about WR' knowing that it was a weakness and he showed her how they were targetting st. brown who ended up pretty darn good.
