FTJudge: what Defendants submitted was hardly a brief. Sure, it had words, citations, etc.-all of the trappings of a brief. Yet it was utterly devoid of meaningful content

Ouch. That sounds almost as bad as the slapping in Bradshaw v. Unity Marine Corp. Maybe worse, overall.

And if the defendants are unhappy about the ruling, the court has some very pointed advice: "If those in UF's administration find this comparison upsetting, the solution is simple. Stop acting like your contemporaries in Hong Kong."

Wow- going down that rabbit hole shows that the judge, while hilarious, also became the first federal judge to be impeached in 30 years for lying to Congress about the sexual abuse of two of his employees.  He got 33 months in jail for that as well.

H. Christopher Bartolomucci

Why does that name sound so familiar?

(looks him up)

Well, shiat. He and I used to be partners at the same firm. Not saying which one.

It was a big firm and I doubt I ever met him (and nothing of value was lost...), but I definitely know the name.

"This Court then gave Defendants another chance to brief the issue. But what Defendants submitted was hardly a brief. Sure, it had words, citations, etc.-all of the trappings of a brief. Yet it was utterly devoid of meaningful content. Finally, Defendants had a fourth chance to discuss the issue at the second hearing. Defendants, however, quickly announced that they had said everything they wanted to say about Pickering in their brief-i.e., nothing."
...
And if the defendants are unhappy about the ruling, the court has some very pointed advice: "If those in UF's administration find this comparison upsetting, the solution is simple. Stop acting like your contemporaries in Hong Kong."

DeSantis breathing about federal judges interfering in state matters (interference is determined on whether the fed judge helps or hinders the state position) in 3... 2... 1...

I cannot fathom how these are the same right-wingers that consider themselves champions of free expression against a largely fabricated "cancel culture." The cognitive dissidence must be deafening.

It's particularly damning (delicious) that the U.S. district Judge is a UF alum.

This has been a particularly bad 10 months or so for UF and their positions on academic/intellectual integrity - all while thumping their chest about being a top 5 public university.

They deserve the darts.

"Don't make US District Judge Mark Walker angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry."

I guess he got an overdose of gamma radiation.

What an unexpectedly fun read! Thanks for that.

This looked like an ass-reaming with a chainsaw.   Rusty chainsaw.

The judge didn't miss the fact that UF touted its prior-restraint practices as saving the taxpayer money while at the same time wasting taxpayer money on lawyers to defend the indefensible.

Cherry on top:  "If the defendants don't like it, the solution is simple.  Stop acting like their counterparts in Hong Kong."

If you find that entertaining, you might check out the other offerings from the "Case Law Hall of Fame" from the Lowering The Bar blog. If you have time, the blog archives can also be a fun way to waste time while learning a (very) little about the law.

Beyond that, welcome to today's lucky 10000.

No cognition. No dissonance.

Now stop liking what I don't like because everything I like is freedom!!!

These chucklef***s don't care whether or not the legislation stands up in court -- nobody who supports them in Fla, who supports this legislation -- will hear anything other than it was passed..

And they've probably already fund-raised off of it.

20 years (impeached 2009; previously Walter Nixon, 1989); but otherwise, yeah.

So it had to sting when US District Chief Judge Mark Walker began by invoking a statue commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre victims

No it didn't.

Do today's Republicans have ANY shame whatsoever?  This isn't a loss - it's the swamp.  Was the judge appointed by Trump?  Still the swamp.  And everyone knows that Biden's the one with the China issue.  Et nauseating cetra, etc.

...according a report issued by UF faculty: [T]he Report said ... use of the terms 'critical' and 'race' could not appear together in the same sentence or document."

And yet the words critical and race appear in the same sentence of that report.

This is chilling to see in Florida.    It may be time to start looking deeper into which dishonorable people are violating the 1st Amendment.   It couldn't possibly be the people that thinks the Constitution starts and ends with the number 2?
