Why are we seeing so many celebrities endorsing cryptocurrency?

For the same reason a lot of celebs started wearing Von Dutch hats in 2004. It's trendy, and/or someone paid them for their endorsement.

// "crypto has lost its credibility, so it's borrowing some of mine..."

If I understand the NFT thing correctly, the blockchain does not contain the image, but only the URL of the image, right?

So if for some reason the URL were no longer valid due to hosting issues or something, what would happen? The blockchain is eternal and inviolate and can't be corrected, surely, so I guess you're just SOL?

I know I'm trying to pretend this is a thing instead of just accepting it as some amalgamation of money laundering and three-card monte.

For any smart person, watching crypto be hawked by overpaid actors and plastered all over F1 racecourses is damn-near absolute proof the industry's a ripoff.

Not only that, an industry that's getting ever more desperate & self-conscious about its inability to best an S&P500 index fund on returns in the past year despite 50% valuation swings.

Why give tens of millions out in advertising? Because finding more people to buy in now and combating the rising recognition it's a joke & a scam is the only thing staving off even worse losses in value than the 2nd-dip ~50% drop within a year it's seeing now.

Crypto & NFTs are becoming a joke and people are drifting toward the exits. Those people need someone to sell to on their way out the door.

I like to rub it in my mom's face that, as an eight year old, I made better investments than her beanie babies lol

Mostly the latter. Crytpo may have been something if it hadn't turned into a way for speculators to make money. But since it did it's just another scam and the way you keep these scams going is through advertising how you people are going to be rich by putting all of your money into speculation bubbles.

The problem is: the infrastructure that crypto is built upon is literally unfinished. Like, they should've looked at the block chain and said "okay, that's a good start... But here's the things we need to fix," and find back to the drawing board.

They didn't do that, so instead, we're left with a cumbersome hunk of junk that can only do 7 transactions per second and whose additive nature makes it a tremendous glut fir resources. In the end, it's only appeal could've been among evangelical techbros in the throes of the Dunning and Kruger effect, who didn't realize they were just reinventing capitalism, but worse.

Scary story time:  Pretty much everyone is approximately as smart as you are.  The guy who mops your floors, the guy who is advising the government on whether or not to go to war, the CEO of that company thinking about how best to collect that golden parachute.

It really is not comforting to realize that people with power aren't special beyond their positions and the opportunities that got them there.

But ACTORS?  Fark me, it just bugs me that our social primate brain equates celebrity with special authority status.

Here's how I explained crypto to a friend recently: "Think of the most obnoxious tech bro you know. Now imagine 500 of them creating a currency where its value is based on their collective agreement about what it's worth and on how much they can fool other people into believing it."

Where I live (Netherlands) our DoJ is looking into famous people/influencers promoting stock market & crypto trading apps. These kind of endorsements are considered financial advice and by law only registered financial experts are allowed to do so. Influencers & other unqualified people will be prosecuted/fined/jailed if they continue to promote financial products.

That's actually the thing that frustrates me the most about CEO pay.  CEOs make outlandish salaries and they're probably just as competent as the VPs, directors, and senior managers below them who all make collectively less than the CEO.
