3 hours of Batman inspired by Kurt Cobain. That sounds awful, hard pass.

I'm a huge Batman fan and I'm thinking fark everything about this movie. I can imagine it for myself.

8 trailers -- begin scenes
Overmopey and uninspired Nirvana cover over starting credits
Cut to helicopter over scary rainy city
Gratuitously mean-guy-style henchmen hurting women and children, men can do nothing
Bruce Wayne in boardroom setting, showing restrained-testosterone personality
Police looking at evidence, Detective Gordon is there
More mean guy henchmen, turns out they have a plan and a leader
Bruce Wayne meets Selina Kyle for some reason
Batman shows up and fights henchmen for some reason
Police are reacting
Catwoman has a scene doing something peripheral to the main plot, Batman becomes involved
Etc, etc, etc, etc, etc
Batman wins big fight
Evil leader is in prison
Bruce Wayne never actually makes it with Selina
Back to helicopter shot
End credits: another uninspired Nirvana cover
Post credits stinger: some BS the second unit threw together
~End~

lol, wut?

The trailers look terrible, and that sure doesn't convince me that was a mistaken impression.

I doubt I'm even going to watch this Batman movie. Seen a lot of Batman movies. A whole lot. Don't really need one more.

2022-01-24 11:43:02 AM
A few buckshot pellets.

2022-01-24 11:49:00 AM
The film's cast also includes Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as crime lord Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson, and Barry Keoghan as young officer Stanley Merkel.

So, we have four from the Rogues Gallery (I'm putting Falcone in there because he's a baddie too), plus The Commish, a DA, and a "young cop" (for a character outline, I'd guess either hard anti-Bats like Bullock from BTAS, or dupes like Wuertz/Ramirez from TDK).

...did the reviews from Spider-Man 3 not reach WB corporate HQ?

// assuming no Pattman dance number, they might still be ok with such an overstocked cast
// they're probably not gonna go campy like Adam West fighting invisible enemies all at once, as fun as that could be

2022-01-24 11:55:12 AM

Dr Dreidel: Colin Farrell as Penguin

I don't see that at all but I've been pleasantly surprised by casting before, even with the Batman films.

....and sometimes I'm not.

This sounds awful, but I'm not sure I could ever like it, regardless. I do not like Paul Dano. He's talked about as some great actor, but he always seems to play Paul Dano.

One is horribly scarred on the inside.  The other is what happens when you can't get the rights to the first guy or the guy who inspired him.

3 hours of wanking to retell the SAME GODDAMN STORY they've done a bazillion times. Oh, and with Riddler (totes not Joker) who is doing all their lines ala Ledger style to TOTALLY NOT be the Joker (wink wink nudge nudge)

Meanwhile, Marvel is all "Fark it all, let's bring Moon Knight up to date" while everyone is WTF, who? and will probably knock it out of the park.

DC -HAS- some excellent characters and stories, if they would stop shooting themselves in the dick trying to reinvent the same farking wheel every single time. >.>

This movie is almost certainly gonna suck super hard.

... not because Batman is an emo loser, that's actually a pretty reasonable interpretation of the character.  Just because the trend is kind of obvious at this point; the only good DC movies are the ones that are trying to make fun of DC movies at this point, don't have to be Nostradamus to play those odds.

// The fact that it's a reasonable interpretation and the idea very easily could produce a good movie is gonna make how much this will suck more frustrating, probably.  My money is on this being a corporate "write a better version of the film in your head before you even leave the theater" kind of movie.

Except from what I've read, when the movie starts, he's been Batman for a couple years. Plenty of time to grow a pair. Christian Bale's Batman was Batman for what, six months total?

You think that spending more time in a profession that makes you mopey and brooding makes you less mopey and brooding?  Or that this necessarily makes for bad storytelling?

Sheesh, nobody tell this guy about Batman: The Animated Series.

// Admittedly if you interpret the Justice League cartoon as part of the same canon as TAS he did eventually get less mopey and more contentedly, genuinely stoic, but that wasn't the passage of time... that was a passage of time that involved him mentoring several children to adulthood and being surrounded by dozens of friends.  Actual character development, not just sticking at the grindstone until he HTFU.

I think it would make him not as emo as he looks in the trailer, get a decent haircut and adopt the playboy role he's supposed to.

Pretty sure James Gunn and HBO has helped with that. They also did decent with Shazam for humor and pacing.

Just seems like they can't unclench for the main characters off the "serious" grimdark.

And just like most folks his age he got nostalgic about his emo years and tried to relive them poorly.

Shazam was my favorite of DC's movies so far, but it also suffered from grimdark in some places. Some of the shifts were tonally jarring on a second watch.  Still leagues better than their other outings though.

You have to go back quite a few decades to see Batman with a piece.

Then again the Batmobile has machine guns in the Keaton movies.

Only on the SECOND watch?

-familial abuse resulting in a fatal car crash
-Billy's just a kid looking for his mom, gets adopted by a sweet family
-DEMONS EAT THE SOULS OF THE UNWORTHY
-"Aw, isn't it sad the kid gets bullied?"
-I WILL KILL YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY JUST LIKE I KILLED MY OWN
-hey, Super Kids/Family!

I like the film just fine, but it is tonally all over the farking place.

Absolutely!  I say make HBO Max DC's Disney+ and release a handful of series a year, and he'll, release any DC movies ON HBO Max, screw the theater at this point!
Hire the right people (like Gunn) and dig deep for DC characters people don't typically know.

I love Legends of Tomorrow but it's no longer D-list characters (it's still fun) but it could use an uncensored boost'

Doom Patrol is fantastic too.

I said he doesn't have a gun.  Everyone knows he had one and then eschewed them in favor of more up-close ass-beatings.
