(Daily Mail)   US government scandals often end with the suffix "gate", since Watergate, which is dumb enough, but now the UK's PM is about to be toppled by partygate   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line

He should be fired for looking like a disheveled drunk who just drank a can of sterno.

I mean, really. He's probably the absolute worst person you could put in charge of England.

But, look at us these days. It's almost like we put these people in power because we're bored and want to see them f*ck everything up for our own amusement.

More specifically, the people within his own party who've decided they want him gone have carefully timed and prepared leaks to turn the public on him.

I wish this were the result of a competent opposition bench convincing the public that he needs to go, but it's really just the fortnight of the long knives from his own side.

Names for US government scandals can end in -gate or in -ghazi. The -gate suffix is used for actual scandals. The -ghazi suffix is used for fake scandals.

Incidentally, the whole "-gate" scandal thing has been pretty much global for decades. The UK alone has been home to, among numerous others, "Hackgate", "Rinkagate", "Traingate", "Squidgygate", "Horsegate"* and "Plebgate" (aka Gategate), as well as a few sillier ones such as Piegate, Flakegate and Blobbygate.

Johnson was sacked from previous two jobs for lying & pathologically lies and bluffs about everything. He is not at all competent for the job he is in and specialises in populist politics which have ruined the economy and enriched his inner circle.

Holding drunken parties during the middle of a lockdown while people were dying was the crowning turd in all this. The image of the Queen sitting alone at her husband's funeral knowing Bojo and pals were kicking it up the night before has made even members of his own party turn on him.

Should never have taken that much to sack him... but for the sake of England and her allies, I certainly hope that they do.

-ghazi: a scandal faked up to harm a rival

Just think. In a country of over 300 million, the best 2 to choose from were Trump and Biden. Really? There was no one else?

At least we get to fight with each other over the scraps which is nice. So we have that going for us.

About the only thing you can't lay at BoJo's feet is that one, though: he wasn't at Number 10 or even in London when those two parties happened.

Everything else though, and especially the handling of the whole mess, is 100% his fault.  BoJo thought he could get away with this, as he's always gotten away with everything in his life.  So instead of just ripping the band-aid off and admitting to everything, he let all the bad news drip out over months, ensuring that every revelation was going to be front page news.

There's also a bit of irony that Dominic Cummings, who had to bear the brunt of his own COVID rule breach, is the one leaking all this to the media.  With a guy like Cummings, as slimy as he is, you don't want him outside the tent pissing in...you want him inside pissing out, as LBJ said about Hoover.  Again, total gaffe on BoJo's part, but he made the deal with that devil to get to Number 10 in the first place, something like this was bound to happen.

Gonna be a tasty week at Westminster, yep

It's on purpose. His stupid shtick is to look like a fool. He comes to work looking normal, and then when the cameras come out he farks his hair up and acts like an idiot. You don't take a fool seriously, and the public isn't going to take a fool seriously. Not even when he is dismantling your country from the inside out. So while the British talking heads chat it up about how foolish he looks and comparing him to trump and whatever, he is very seriously doing business in the background. He didn't become head of his party by being a fark up.

You can lay it ALL at his feet since he is prime minister and he and his cabinet set the social distancing rules. He stood at a podium and told the nation what the rules are. And this farkknuckle decides it's okay for Number 10 to be party town. Any leader with a semblance of competence (i.e. most countries) would have made sure that they followed the rules as best they could and come down hard on those who didn't.

I made this point in another thread. In the US you literally had a sitting President try to stage an insurrection to overturn an election and stay in power, a Congress that is blocking a trillion dollar recovery bill and a Supreme Court that is attacking abortion rights. But people in the UK are up in arms that the PM had a couple of beers with work colleagues at work.

/Leader of the Opposition Kier Starmer was caught on camera having a beery at work with colleagues during lockdown. But he's still demanding the PM resign, saying what he did was different, because reasons.

Yes because he was having beer during an election campaign meeting that was happening regardless. Not quite the same thing as a bring your own bottle event or the other parties that happened for no other reason than being a party.

Not party, but parties, one of which was held against repeated warnings the day before Prince Philip's funeral where the queen observed covid rules. If it was just the one it would probably have blown over but there were Wine Fridays at No.10 every week. That Bojo lied to parliament has certainly not helped matters.

US/UK is hardly global. But you are not wrong: 'gate names for scandals do (annoyingly!) appear outside the anglosphere.

While it was at first reserved for major political scandals, by now it has been watered down to pretty much nothing. We had a 'spoongate' (lusikkagate) when a local politician was photographed sipping a hot drink from a cup with a spoon. Proper etiquette would of course be leaving the spoon on the table. The tabloids went mad for 0.017 milliseconds, which was enough for a -gate suffix.
