I wrote an octave/matlab script years ago to convert raw IMG files into PNG images years ago. That was kind of a fun rainy day project.

Super glad I have not wasted any of my life dealing with moon-truthers and their products.

Super glad that we have such good images. But... it is... impressive and sad that the Moon is so bleak and stark and more or less gray scale. We need to get some color up there.

Why take rock photos? What does NASA do with this information?

Colorize the Moon?  That's ambitious.  Obviously whatever we paint on it should be oriented to look best from north of the equator... because we're the ones most likely to do it and screw the southies.

I say we should do a goatse pic.

Science.

Astronomers who study the Moon use it a lot.  You need data to test ideas.

Why hasn't the US made it a priority to go back to the moon?

If nothing else, send some mining expeditions instead of everyone worrying about going and dying on the way to, or at Mars.

And BTW, NASA polls the astronomical community ever ten years to see what scientists think will be the most useful for their fields.  What science missions NASA funds or asks Congress to fund is largely bases on those surveys. And every science mission proposal must explain why the science it will generate is important. And the observations that Webb will do had some astronomers write detailed reasons why the proposed observation is important and why it needs to be Webb and not a lesser instrument that does it. That application for time on Webb took months to prepare. A successful proposal to make a probe takes years.

OhioUGrad: Why hasn't the US made it a priority to go back to the moon?

Actually, it is a priority right now. And an armada of uncrewed spacecraft headed to the Moon starting this year. And in a few years NASA plans send "the first woman and next man" to the Moon. This was a priority for TFG Administration as well as the Biden Administration. If all goes well, we are months away for an uncrewed test mission to lunar orbit and back using the system which NASA plans to use for people on the mission after that.

Now why was the Moon low priority for decades? Money, risk of losing a crew, money. people got bored somehow, money, we beat the Soviets, money, money, money and of course money.

Put me in the "who gives a shiat" camp. We walked on the moon sixty years ago and put a flag up. Why go back just to refresh our egos.

So we don't have to settle for Norman Rockwell paintings on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

I hope they line up the pixels in proper order, or else I'm gonna be really confused by that mess.

Colors of the moon https://science.nasa.gov/colors-moon

And some green and orange found by the Apollo 17 geologist.

The orange stuff found during apollo 17 was rust.  If you can make it gray scale then you get water vapor.

At the risk of being a nitpicker, 2022-1972=50 not 60. Apollo 11 itself will be 53 years ago come July.
