TheMysteriousStranger: He baked that cake with only a paper clip, some used bubblegum, a piece of paper, and an old BlackBerry. Don't ask me how.

He improvised a burner Element by connecting the paperclip to the battery port in the Blackberry, the paper was used like a cupcake wrapper and the bubble gum ended up becoming the base for the frosting.

Had no idea his breakout was 'General Hospital', although that audience isn't really fitting to my demographic.

Loved him in McGyver growing up, never really got into Stargate -- is it worth a watch as a casual sci-fi fan?

Stargate SG1 is the best scifi/adventure series yet.  The canon is so much tighter than the Trek universe.

Its writing style is a bit dated compared to modern shows, but it's absolutely worth the looksee.  Stick thru to Thor's Chariot when they start widening the universe up from just the snakeheads to see if it's for you.

And once they hit season 3, when the cast is well used to each other, they really lighten up and start to have fun with their characters.

I think that is the season where Teal'c saying "indeed" became a running gag, along with Jack O'Neill turning into the world's biggest Simpsons fan.

I always cracked up when someone would ask O'Neill where he'd heard a quote he just repeated that happened to be profound at the moment and he'd casually say "Homer", as if he were referencing the ancient Greek philosopher.

The episode where the actual voice actor who does Homer Simpson is a barber with a psychic connection to O'Neill is a masterpiece.

Indeed. One of my favorite scenes was where the woman runs crying out of the barber shop after the barber tells the story of Jack losing his memory and fathering a child with the woman he loved.

^ What everyone said.  Give it a watch.  Great series with great stories.  Everything is an arc with some filler one offs.

As a casual sci-fi fan?  Absolutely.  A hard sci-fi fan might find it difficult to overlook how all of the humans they encounter somehow speak modern English despite being taken from Earth thousands of years ago.  But the show, as a whole, didn't take itself too seriously and embraced the occasional moments of comic relief.  A large part of that was due to Richard Dean Anderson.  Supposedly his main caveat for accepting the role was that they allow him to bring a sense of humor to the character.

As others have said, the show is kind of hit or miss at times, but it's definitely worth a watch for anyone that's even a little bit of a sci-fi fan.

Trek has a few episodes that are better than anything you'll get from 'Gate, but 'Gate maintains a higher and more consistent average quality almost from the get-go.

Expect tits in the first episode, fwiw.  It was started on Showtime before going to SciFiChannel.

I can dig it, but both of them being 9.5 episodes doesn't show how they're *very* different tales.  Inner Light is some of the purest science fiction ever put in a 60min episode and it talks about the destiny of the human species whereas WoO is 'Gate riffing on a well-trod trope in scifi.

It's also worth pointing out the spinoff series, Stargate Atlantis. A couple seasons in they decided they needed their version of Teal'c and brought in a relatively unknown (at the time) actor named Jason Momoa.
