The full text of the letter is here:

With all due respect ... no, I don't work for you

Most, if not the majority of school boards, especially in smaller districts, are volunteer. People who step up to serve their communities. And now they get screamed at and harassed and even assaulted. It's obscene.

There are plenty of crappy politicians out there, especially as you go higher up the food chain. At the local level, it's overwhelmingly good people doing a thankless job.

2022-01-23 7:53:52 AM
charlatans who claim health and safety measures are responsible for destroying the mental health of children simply to justify their own social agenda, you are the most offensive and vile of all

This is about masks, isn't it?

To listen to your repeated distortions of the facts is nauseating.

Yup, masks.

2022-01-23 8:06:16 AM
I do feel bad for the local school boards, with the mask and vaccine ranters showing up now. We have one locally that keeps threatening to take his kids out and send to private school over masks and the CRT boogeyman yet he doesn't and still shows up at the monthly meetings to rant.

You do have a choice, the fact you can't afford private schooling is not the fault of the school board, so you have to play by the public school rules.

But you can also be civil about it and your public comments too. They are not mutually exclusive.

2022-01-23 8:48:00 AM
I would like to see the transcripts of these parents. If they have a 2.5 or lower, they need to write a 10 page essay on why they should be allowed to speak before the board. It will be graded by a teacher and they only get to speak if they get a C or higher.

2022-01-23 9:01:53 AM
In my town, CRT/anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers and other assorted right-wing warriors have been harassing the local board of education. They've been relentless. They have also co-opted the local republican party, forcing out anyone that is reasonable on any level. The only good part about it is that in the most recent election, they collectively had their asses completely handed to them. They could not have lost in any more of a spectacular fashion. This in a town that up until a few years ago was solidly republican.

That is when you follow up with an innocuous question maybe about how to explain to your kids, how other people's who attitudes are so bad, they kids get rejected by the private schools and ask if the school has any advice for parents to talk to their kids about very stupid adults.

Robinson's essay drew a reaction from Nicole Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, who told Fox News Digital that the school board member was mocking parents.

Name rings a bell.

Ties to the Koch Brothers

Speech First's president and only listed employee, Nicole Neily has worked for many Koch-affiliated groups. Neily was the president of the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity, the Cato Institute's manager of external relations, the coalition relations manager for FreedomWorks' Center for Global Economic Growth, and a "Koch summer fellow for both the Center for Financial Privacy and Human Rights and the Competitive Enterprise Institute."[7]

Even before the 'rona it was hard to imagine a more thankless position than School Board.

If you do the job right literally everyone hates you: parents, students, teachers & homeowners. The meetings are boredom to the nth power and you're generally paid nothing, or a stipend so low it's somehow more insulting than nothing.

Now that you've got idiots who consider listening to Joe Rogan the equivalent to being the Chair of Immunology at Johns Hopkins screaming at you every month, my God, who would ever want to run?

With all due respect to the men and women who snarl, 'I'm a taxpayer! You work for me!' No, I don't work for you. I was elected by people who voted to represent you," Robinson wrote.

That made sense in his head.

A few years back a friend of mine's wife was on the school board and got shouted at in a meeting because the classrooms were too hot in August/September and their crotchfruit wasn't basking in optimal learning temperature.

After the d-bag was done with their fit my friend's wife calmly reminded them "we put it on the ballot to upgrade area schools with climate control measures and," (gestures to group in front of her) "it was voted down."

I'm told it was quiet after that.

Insane pressure to do well in sports or standardized testing is character building.  Asking kids to wear masks for public health will make them all crazy and suicidal.

Is that the landscape they're painting?

The school board does not work for the parents.
The school board works for all the citizens of the school district.

If parents want absolute veto power over how the schools operate, they can pony up the money to send them to a private institution or home-school them.

If Democrats were good at this game, state parties would be using this much more to their advantage. "Hey, remember when you voted in all those local Republicans and your life completely turned to sh*t in a week? What if we told you there's a way to avoid that in the future?"

I have a lot of conversations with high schoolers that end with them saying, "so basically previous generations ruined everything and we're the ones who have to deal with it?"

And all I can really say back is "yeah, sorry."

The "school choice " astroturf movement is about private schools. That taxpayers not parents pay for. In Cal , they want 14k per kid.

Most private schools with half a clue will not admit the kids of these people and would put up some kind of restriction that would ultimately say "we are a private school. If you don't like the policy, there's the door."

And then we are basically to where many of these people want to be:  home schooling. problem is they don't want to have to pay taxes to support public schools and they want funding to pay themselves.

All of these people refuse to understand the first premise in learning anything: admitting they might be wrong.

Your ability to uncontrollably dump loads into your second cousin doesn't give you the ability to understand how best to educate a child. Now shut the fark up and sit the fark down; there are professionals working.

Honestly, telling dumbass parents to go f*** themselves is a good use of school board time and resources.

You may be required to have public comment but you're not required to pay attention. Have the board members pull out their phones and play Candy Crush the second the imbeciles show up.

It's really hard to be introspective enough to realize our own faults without being defensive and downplaying them while also recognizing it doesn't make us uniquely awful.

Its super easy to point out the flaws in others, though, and since they've rarely done the work to realize we're all in the gutter, they sure feel super smug about their perceived superiority.

And yes, I realize this will probably draw criticism from those feeling defensive, even though I haven't specified any of my opinions about who is right on a particular subject...

Pretty recently, I was kind of interested in an IT position at a school. I was talking to a former principal that just recently retired. He was called a lot for computers not working. He said the absolute first thing you have to ask is, "did you press the button and turn it on?"

Can you image teachers in 2021/2022 not knowing how to make sure a PC is even on before calling someone to check it out because it "isn't doing anything." Yet, here we are.

This. School boards need to stop kowtowing to petulant parents and they need to make it clear that they do not run their schools.

The only potential downside is getting even more insane racists running for school board out of vengeance.

There are two additional avenues of thought here:

1. "I was elected by people who voted to represent you." is the same line that Trump took after he was elected, just poorly worded.  He represented the people who voted for him only, not all of America.  This makes it a situation of "Its only all OK when we do it!" hypocrisy.

2.  It depends on what is being brought up at the meetings.  If people are using this as a platform to unload their grievances against the government, as opposed to school board business, then he has a point.

So, here in Iowa, schools have a date which enrollment is counted, and state funding for the district is calculated from that total.

All the farkin' anti-vaxxers came up with this plan to yank their kids out of school, then re-enroll them after the enrollment totals were counted. Meaning far less $ per student for the district.

Now they are biatching because schools can't fund what they have, let alone plan for future growth.

Brilliant. Farking brilliant.
