I just like to know where this is. and why they had to turn around there.

Camera was at an interesting spot, and TBH It probably wold have bottomed out if the rear wheels slipped off, and got stuck instead of falling off

Well the weight's in the front, so...

2022-01-23 1:27:58 AM
A friend of mine in high school tried this once.  Once.

I have luckily never run into a situation where I felt I had to do that.

Let me narrow it down for you Subby:

He's no genius.

Glad the front didn't fall off

Good thing he did it quickly!

Acting like an 18 point turn is some sort of magic, calm down.

When I'm playing Dirt Rally and the car turns around impossibly on a road like that I just admit defeat and hit the restart button.

2022-01-23 7:08:23 AM
Uh, looks like the road clears up like 100ft on.

I, however am having no problem whatsoever in assigning a category to this person.

26 point turn, just like they taught us in Drivers Ed.

Personally, I would have just backed down.

Well, you could stand him up at the gates of hell, but he wouldn't back down.

A genius does not get into that situation.

Heh. A friend of mine has a small gold claim up in the hills around Darrington somewhere. It's a tailing pile on an abandoned mine that never did really produce much but a little hard work can show enough color to pay for the gas to get up to it so it's a good excuse to go up and fark around in the dirt. It's on a long old trail that is just about as wide as a Jeep. When I had my '72 Blazer, we were headed up there one November, the weekend after Thanksgiving. We came to a point where there was a large tree that had fallen over the trail. There were a couple of feet of snow on the ground, no place to turn around, about 100 foot drop on one side and the cliff on the other. We ended up reversing down the trail, maybe about three miles before we got to a spot that was wide enough for me to do that. It took maybe a 10-point turn to get the truck turned around and I had to lean the LR wheel off the side to get that.

4-spd manual for the win. Can't do that with an automatic. God I miss that truck.

I just watched that for like 10 minutes waiting for success.

Why?
Did he have that "I left the gas burner on back home" premonition?

/would'a just drove all the way to point A, and hung a U.

I park on a driveway that's on the side of a mountain.  I'd never try to turn around on it, but I do try to back up as far as possible if there are going to be other people there at the same time, as the level part can't quite fit two cars, and the top of the driveway is steep with a turn required.

If you back up very, very slowly, you will feel when the back tire is at the edge of the pavement and starts to drop down, and you can stop and go back forward before you drop off.

Of course, my drop is maybe 6 inches into dirt, so I'm not going to kill myself if things go wrong.  But if the driver is in tune with his vehicle, and you have enough space (which he just barely did), it could be done safely.

And I suspect that the guy filming was the passenger, and he decided to film rather than stay in the car while this happened

kkinnison: I just like to know where this is. and why they had to turn around there.

They had to turn around there for the internet. You can see a building just behind them. I'm sure there was somewhere he could have turned around there but that doesn't get views on TikTok.

There was probably a bus or transport coming the other way.  I'll bet this wasn't the first time the driver had done something like this.

In addition to wondering where this happened (Northern Italy? Peru?) what kind of vehicle was that? (Citroen?)
I am befuddled with lines of inquiry

My thought exactly.

Of course, I try to work P&tB into daily conversations.

I've driven on roads like that before on trips. There is no amount of money that you could pay me to attempt that maneuver.

There's nothing there.  He could have pulled up where it flattened out and turned around.  Duh. There's buildings there.  He was just doing it to show off.

Now now... dont be so quick to judge....

Maybe there was a spider up there.

That car looks new enough to have a backup camera. Why not just back up to where you can turn around without tempting the organ donor card fates?

Y'all didn't notice at first how the video was sped up and distorted to appear more dangerous than it seemed?

I shot a video of someone at the Manassas, Virginia Amtrak Station doing a three-point turn in the middle of a grade-crossing in front of an approaching train.

Of course we noticed the video was sped up. It had no effect on how dangerous that seemed, which (of course) was pretty farking dangerous.

The closest I've gotten to this was while exploring an abandoned railroad way.  We were on a raised section and the bridge we stopped at was in very bad condition. Trains are huge, right?  Well, they aren't very wide and this was formerly a single track, might have been 10 ft wide. We were in a Corvair, which had a 9 ft wheelbase.
