Dr. Brown's is like the default brand for black cherry soda around here, but I don't think I've ever seen this celery stuff in the wild. I think I would've tried it by now otherwise.

I'd very much enjoy a sparkling lemonade. Lemmy is the only brand I know of, sunkist stopped making theirs years ago. Though if you find one of those digital soda fountains and their fanta is loaded properly... purplesaurus rex soda!

Yep.  Which is the going rate for a Dr. Brown's single in any deli in the NYC area.

My husband was highly amused when I signed myself up for a Stop & Shop loyalty card, drove over to the grocery in the next town and loaded up the mini fridge in the hotel with Dr. Brown's diet cream and diet black cherry sodas for him back in December.

He was more amused when we had to go up a couple of weeks ago and I made sure I had a case of his preferred sparkling water flavors and a case of Coke Zero Sugar for me.

Article isn't wrong. Cel-Ray soda is an absolute must at a kosher deli.

Yep.  It's refreshing after a bite of a peppery, smoky, fatty pastrami.  First time I saw it, back in the 70's, I thought it was the most disgusting idea for a beverage flavor.  My lovely Jewish auntie told me to take a bite of my corned beef sandwich, then a sip of Cal-Ray.  I then understood that particular bit of alchemy.

Add in some good pickles, some cole slaw, and some matzoh ball soup.

Grew up outside of Philly.  For us the black cherry soda was:

Publix stocks/hides it in the ethnic aisle; good with bourbon, never tried it with gin. Even in retail grocery it's expensive. The recipe sounds worth a try.

This is something I have neither heard of, nor find really appetizing.

Sounds like something Jones Soda would include in their Thanksgiving Soda pack.

The first recipe is much more like Dr. Brown's. The second is much better but a far cry from the original.

.... Yeah, if it's got celery and cardamom but no actual celery seed it's not the New York Deli celery soda.

There used to be a Raspberry Cream Soda made by Blue Sky that was the best farking thing ever (even better made in to a sparkling milkshake with peach nectar and vanilla ice cream) until farking coca farking cola bought them out and canceled the flavor.

Fnckers.

Speaking of disappearing drinks, what in the hell happened to Leinenkugel's grapefruit shandy? I haven't seen it around here for a couple of years. That stuff is a summertime tradition. Or at least it was :(

Raw celery tastes weird to me. The best way I can describe it is it tastes like it's making the surface of my tongue numb when it really isn't.

Cooked celery doesn't have that effect.

I feel like celery is like cilantro--some people are just fine with it and it makes others go crazy. I like cilantro, but celery is disgusting to me. You can put it in soup and I'll deal, but any other application makes everything around it taste like celery. The idea of putting peanut butter on a stalk of celery sounds like absolutely madness to me. I can't imagine voluntarily drinking it.

That sort of thing is why I started making my own syrups a few years before I stopped drinking soda altogether

What, you make a simple syrup with celery seed, strain out the solids, then mix syrup and seltzer. Alton Brown covered this years ago.

Leinie's red. Former an all season brew. Then a seasonal. Then only in the explorer packs.

Haven't seen it in two years.

The Bible of the soda fountain trade back in the day was The Dispenser's Formulary. A good updated one is Fix the Pumps.

we definitely had it here in NE Phila this past summer, and more than a few other brands/variants. both in stores and on draft. guess more of a supply thing, then?

same. if I saw it in the store, I'd certainly grab one opportunistically. even at $3 or whatever.

similarly, I'd order this if seen on a drinks menu, but never once try at home -

Dr. Brown's Cream Soda is great.

My long gone grandfather loved Cel-Ray. I've never seen or met anyone else who'd even have a second sip after the initial one.
