I finally got a Disney+ subscription a few weeks ago just so I could check out The Mandalorian. I have to say, it is much, much better than I expected, but that's because I expected it to be like the prequels and the last three sequels. I'm not sure I like the dark + warmhearted aesthetic, but I do like the actors and it's pretty much a rollicking good time.

So I'm going to allow myself to be optimistic about the other series. I'll have to look at The Book of Boba Fett next.

In fairness, your example is basically tied for "the worst one" with The Rise of Skywalker.  So you're not exactly taking a representative sample there.

For those who hate reading TFAs, here's the summary: Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast in the upcoming Ahsoka series, but her role hasn't been revealed.

And that's it. The rest of the article is filler.

I dunno about that. The Clone Wars and Rebels had some of the best writing that the Star Wars universe has ever seen. And that was including the Ahsoka episodes, and a lot of fans HATED the character at first. And she winds up being one of the most rounded and most fully realized characters in the series--then again, they had over 76 hours of material to flesh out the characters and the universe. Including a young Boba Fett and made Anakin Skywalker into more than a whiney brat. Heck, even Maul and Ventris got their arcs to make them more than cardboard cutout bad guys.

But then again, it comes down to the writing. The better stuff tends to come from the small screen, because they have more time to develop it and the world.

I'm liking The Book of Boba Fett. I like the slower pace, I like filling in the back story a bit, I like him fallible and frangible. Just a simple man making his way through the universe, like his father before him. Trying to build something rather than just work for someone else's benefit. And definitely feeling his years, since this is post Empire Boba Fett. I'm interested to see how this plays out, which is kind of the point. Not the best the franchise has done, but then again, I think that TBOBF would have benefitted from being released at once, rather than getting nitpicked for weeks on end.

From her looks I'm willing to wager she's playing one of the sisters she met in the final Clone Wars arc.
YMMV with those characters, they were a little too "in your face" during their first appearance. Subsequently they popped-up in the Bad Batch, there they better written.

I'm one of those fans: the Ahsoka arc is really the only arc I care about in that galaxy, though in 1980 I went trick or treating as Han Solo. I'm sure I'll devour the Andor series. And I'm slogging through The Book of Boba Fett with the rest of you. But as it was implied in the Mandalorian, we'll be seeing Thrawn in the Ahsoka product. Thrawn is without a doubt my favorite character in the franchise. Great time to be a fan.

I don't understand why some of you feel so threatened by the inevitable reintroduction of Jade. She'll obviously be completely rewritten, and she won't be costumed in a way that showcases her enormous breasts and makes your wee-wees feel funny. She'll just be a bad-ass Jedi with red hair who may or may not have some tenuous connection to the OT characters.

The easiest way to bring her back in is have her be one of Luke's first students at his post-ROTJ Jedi academy, and say she went rogue. (It also helps support their "angry hermit Luke" outcome if it's established that Luke messed up with every promising candidate he tried to train. Even Grogu eventually joins a Vespa gang and starts angry dancing like Maguire in Spider-Man 3.)

Winstead is super hot, and she was great in Scott Pilgrim. That movie amuses me. I caught the last half on Comedy Central one day and was intrigued by it so I bought the DVD.  I was like, "why is this movie so damn good?", since it's not my film genre. Then I saw it's an Edgar Wright flick.

Like all of Edgar Wright's movies, the editing is absolutely amazing and the soundtrack is perfect.

I could see them pulling elements from the Heir series to make the first season of Ahsoka.

Ahsoka in place of Luke, a brainwashed Ezra instead of a clone with extra vowels... Maybe even the Noghri. I mean, Ahsoka makes a better "Lady Vader" than Leia anyway. She's actually Vader's trained apprentice, so a kind of successor.

If Mara Jade was presented as Ahsoka's insecure and self-doubting sidekick/padawan, the Gabrielle to her Xena, at least the Fark threads would be an entertaining mess.

TruFan 1: "I hate Mara Jade! She only exists so sexist pigs can lust after her boobies! Sinful naughty BOOBIES!"

TruFan 2: "You're the sexist who keeps talking about her tits, you sexist! I'm mad because they betrayed the character! She was like the most powerful Jedi ever and now she's just a whiny sidekick! I've meticulously catalogued and rated each and every instance of her being awesome in the EU novels and comics, and this live-action Jade hasn't precisely reenacted a single one of those instances to my satisfaction!"

TruFan 3: "Typical male fan so afraid of STRONG WOMEN that he instantly dismisses what she does! Can I say 'incel' now? Because I love saying the word 'incel'. Only incels hate Mara Jade!"

TruFan 1: "No, only incels like Mara Jade because she's a wish fulfillment sex fantasy that caters to the male gaze with her BOOBIES! Nasty wicked BOOOOOBIES!!!"

TruFan 2: "I didn't dismiss what she does! The show writers and director dismissed what she does! They don't know the franchise like I do, these stupid people named... Hey, I just looked up the credits and this is really weird. The episode with Mara Jade was written by a girl. And directed by a girl. And, y'know, she's played by a girl, too. Do you think maybe girls like this girl character?"

TruFan 3: "Dude, have you ever heard of a girl being a gatekeeper for a sci-fi or fantasy franchise? This is men's work. Besides, how would I know? I've never actually spoken to a real girl."

TruFan 1: "You mustn't! They'll bewitch you with their BOOBIES! Their evil quivering cherry-topped demon mound BOOBIES!"

TruFan 2: "Okay, seriously man. You need professional help. You've got crazy mommy issues or something."

TruFan 3: "Yeah, that's something even we can agree on."

One of the Martez sisters?  Unlikely as they are coded as hispanic.

Mara Jade?  I don't find that terribly likely either.  Without her relationship to Luke she would be a completely different character who happens to share the name Mara Jade which would make people just as agitated as not including her at all.  Just leave Mara be, she's had her story and it's done.

Most likely she will be playing a completely new character but I would be absolutely psyched if she played Che'ri from the Thrawn novels.  Let Filoni show that he knows how to place nice with other creators.

With the Mandalorian, Disney finally did what they should have been trying to do with their Star Wars movies: they pulled in a new generation of fans. And fans who know Star Wars as a Disney property aren't clinging to anything from the EU. So they can rewrite Mara Jade any way they want and it won't matter if the old fans grumble about it. They're not - or at least they shouldn't be - the primary target audience anymore.

All they have to include are the basics. Red hair. Jedi bad-ass. Someone who would sit out the events of the Disney sequel trilogy. They can change up everything else, and I really hope they do. The stupid resurrection of the Emperor in Rise of Skywalker opens the door for Jade to still be his apprentice, but it won't do the character any favors to link her to that trainwreck of a movie.

Mara Jade?  I don't find that terribly likely either.

Neither do I, Jade (as written in the EU) is supposed to be a fiery redhead. Plus, Clone Wars had plenty of chances to present her as "The Emperor's Hand," it didn't happen. Plopping her in the middle of the narrative now would be six kinds of stupid.

Since a Sarlacc takes thousands of years to digest its prey alive it's obvious that it secretes some sort of enzyme that preserves living flesh.  His exposure might have left him effectively immortal at this point. At least immortal to the extent of not aging.

I'd love for Mara Jade to be introduced as a real, nuanced character instead of Luke-level Mary Sue fanservice. Winstead is good enough an actress that she could pull that off. With the cloned emperor, they've already introduced the dumbest thing in the Zahn books, and, despite being almost as stupid, it still was better than the EU version, so why not try to redeem the second dumbest?

/Zahn's original fiction is more interesting than his glorified fanfiction. It's actually good, instead of just "good for an EU book".
//Can't wait until all of KoTOR is back to being canon.

So they can rewrite Mara Jade any way they want, sure.  But at that point, why not make an original character so you don't have to deal with any of the associated baggage?  If we're only worried about new fans, the name or hair color would be irrelevant.

luidprand: I'd love for Mara Jade to be introduced as a real, nuanced character instead of Luke-level Mary Sue fanservice.

Oh FFS, enough with this. Luke was never a Mary Sue. He's treated as a joke by everyone in New Hope until he takes out the Death Star, something all the other pilots thought would be difficult but not something anyone else couldn't have done, and he only does it thanks to Ben's supernatural coaching and Han saving his bacon. In Empire, he keeps screwing up more and more and ends a failure, having to be saved by the others after Vader easily mops the floor with him. And in Jedi, he starts off as just part of the team, then breaks off to go resolve his daddy issues and nearly gets himself killed again, only this time he's saved by Vader. Far from being a Mary Sue, he's the prototypical unlikely hero. The humble, know-nothing farmer who no one respects until circumstances push him into doing a couple heroic acts.

I didn't read much of the EU novels, but I'm starting to wonder if Mara Jade was as overpowered and unstoppable as some of you keep complaining she was. I don't remember her dominating the show in the Heir to the Empire books and being the best at everything without effort. She was just meant to be a counterpart to Luke, who wasn't a one-man army either. Neither of them take down Thrawn, who just goes out like a chump at the hands of one of his own henchmonsters.

Believe it or not, while there may not be a Spain or Latin America in the Star Wars universe, animated characters are sometimes coded to a specific race (see Sabine Wren) OR interpreted as coded to a specific race by parts of the fandom (see Ahsoka, despite being orange and voiced by a white woman).

Of course you are free to believe the Martez sisters were meant to be white brunette women just don't be shocked when Mary Elizabeth Winstead doesn't end up playing either of them.

Same reason you bring back Boba Fett instead of just being satisfied with Mando. The name recognition is there, and you've got a character design with proven popularity. It isn't about appealing to the old fans. It's about recognizing that something about this character struck enough of a chord that she sold a bunch of merchandise and people still remember her.

But mostly it's the merchandise thing. Mara Jade sold tons of figures and she was never even in the cartoons, let alone the movies. That's an untapped revenue source just waiting to be put back in business.
