"My argument was that the old order of media in which I grew up - one defined by powerful institutions imbued with deep and sometimes suffocating institutional cultures - was acutely vulnerable to disruption. This presented insurgent forces of the sort we represented with an arresting opportunity - one that was exerting a magnetic pull on me."

...

"The largest problem with the dilution of institutional power in an age of media hyper-saturation is that it is a gift to public officials seeking to evade accountability. <...> Powerful media institutions can defend themselves in lawsuits, and stand up to intimidation from public officials, corporate interests and advertisers in a way that smaller entities and individuals cannot. <...> Finally - maybe? - news organizations with a strong rudder amid the cultural and ideological storms of the moment may be able to revive the notion of a public square, in which people have shared acceptance of hard facts even as they argue about the proper response to these facts."

I'm not even sure I'd give Politico even 1% responsibility for the collapse of journalism in the US. Craigslist gets like 60% and Facebook gets at least 39%.

This is why the best news sources are trustworthy local independent journalists.

The writing was on the wall for newspapers a long time before Criagslist.

I'd argue the transition would have taken longer. As it was, Craigslist was like a Fast'N'Furious nitrous boost in the downhill race to the bottom. It literally cut out the bulk of journalism funding in the US in a few years. It didn't even take a decade.

Is there stuff going on on Craigslist that I've missed? Since MWWTmXX isn't a search term any more I've lost interest

Before the dawn of the interwebz, the course for journalism towards flashy entertainment was already set.  It was obvious enough for a movie to use it as a backdrop for a love triangle, "Broadcast News".

Can't blame nor credit the internet. And Politico can't claim to be catalyst nor own a pyrrhic victory. It was our own damned fault. We consumed whatever mental junkfood the media churned out to satiate our simple-minded, short-attention spans.

I'm not googling that.

Craigslist killed classified sections in newspapers, which undercut a very large portion of their reliable income.

Politico is 15 years old?  I guess that explains all the edgy "I hate the establishment" articles and crusty pillows.

The way I see it, politico helped popularize the inside baseball reporting of politics.  Every reporter between DC and NYC started talking about who was the slickest at winning and not what was the impact to people.

In my opinion this is big reason for the Republicans win when they lose and win and Dems lose even when they win type of coverage.
