Lambskincoat: How could he be a Norse god? Norse gods are White! White! White!!!

He was even playing Heimdall the White!

// makes sense in the antonymnal sense, like nicknaming a 6'8 bodybuilder "Tiny"
// assuming that Planet Asgard also used the terms "white" and "black" to denote skin tone
// although they spoke English, so I guess anything is likely
// CS,Heebro: the Talmud also uses this kind of opposite-naming system, e.g. in referring to people with vision loss as "[having] enough light" (sagi nahar, in Aramaic)

"And, you know, it's been part of the conversation"

Here's how I imagine the conversation went:

Producer: "Hey Barbara, how about Idris Elba for the role next time?"
BB: "LOL no."

Technically, there was a "conversation".

/Ralph Fiennes should have gotten the role over Craig, but he blew his chance by doing The Avengers
//Henry Cavill is, I'm sure, not interested in doing any more franchises

So, the guy to replace Craig, who hung up his PPK due to being too old to continue playing the character, is currently 11 years older than Craig was in his first Bond movie.

Sounds smart

Personally, I would not like to see Elba as Bond. I like him, he's a good actor, certainly handsome, he's done some good work. I just don't think he'd be a good Bond.

Agreed. The only thing actually working against him isn't his race or even his age -- it's the same thing that hobbled Craig's Bond. He's too good of an actor.  When you get too good of an actor, they try to give Bond an arc, and Craig's tenure proved that that is a terrible idea.

I'm of two minds on this news.

One the one hand... I think Elba is an amazing actor, and I think he can bring all of the best aspects of JB together to make a really well-rounded character. We know he can do action (Craig), we know he can do classy (Brosnan), we know he can do brooding (Dalton), we know he can do humor (Connery). He's a solid choice.

But on the other hand... maybe he's a little too solid of a choice. Craig was not a huge name in the US when he was tapped to take on the role, and that allowed him the chance to grow the character organically. I think that overall, his run as Bond was second only to Connery, who also was not a household name when Dr. No was released in 1962. Maybe it's time to take another lesser-known actor and try it again.

The Bond series is played out, and Elba should just give it a pass if offered the part.

And you just pointed out the problem. If they gave Elba the role instead of Craig, perfect. By the time the film another Bond movie, that ship has sailed.

In regards to what?  Craig's were better done, more financially successful and didn't star a piece of shiat woman beater.

// I assume she's already been on Who at some point
// but it would be a neat twist if James Bond wasn't played by exactly the kind of person who sticks out as a secret agent (take the beginning of Casino Royale, in Madagascar - how in fark does a tall, white, muscular dude not immediately attract the attention of every criminal around, or be recognizable to anyone looking for the suspect?)
// although I guess short and doughy has its own secret agent-y problems, and it's not like she wouldn't also stick out in Madagascar

The #1 rule for casting James Bond:

No Aussies.

See:  George Lazenby

2022-01-21 6:07:04 PM
Best case: He turns in a better two-film performance than Timothy Dalton (No. 2 on Bonds overall in my book).

1. Connery for the template setting, like Washington in "how to be an American president."
2. Dalton, for being close to the novels' Bond and doing Craig's Bond years before -- a burning out professional a-hole, but without the martyr complex, and in two Top 10 Bond films to boot.
3. Craig, a good modern take but hampered by a line of weak films and a tiresome masochistic streak
4. Brosnan, with two very strong starting films and then the most horrid pair of Bond films back-to-back; Roger Moore's act with a more believable action actor
5. Moore, who has the second-best Bond film to save him (For Your Eyes Only) from being viewed as the franchise's Adam West as Batman
6. Lazenby, who was outshined by Diana Rigg, Telly Savalas and his lady hench (OHMSS is still Top 10 Bond film)

Cuz I keep getting hung up on British
Pinnock has the same problem as Elba.  Chiwetel Ejiofor is probably at the top end of where you want to start.  Boyega is a bit too young (though perhaps he won't be by the time you are done shooting). How about Ashley Walters?

Toby I think is the youngest of the lot, so he would be better positioned for a series of movies.
