FTA: If approved, the legislation could mean Youngkin giving up his power to hand-pick the state's top election official, potentially appealing to Democrats worried about political interference and to Republicans who say they want to boost public confidence in the system.

Confidence in the system to do what? And if a segment of the public is delusional, would such confidence in doing whatever come at a decrease in actual performance in doing whatever?

I need to send postcards to my delegate and state senator about those.

Anyone who just passes off the right wing framing as being factual is lying to you.

It's not about public confidence, its about rigging elections and making sure only the right type of people can vote.

Not sure what the Republicans are even on about, I live in VA and have to show an ID every time I vote. From the Virginia Department of Elections website:

View what they're trying to do in VA in the context of what the GOP is doing or trying to do in other states.

This isn't (just) a voter ID thing, this is (also) a "put one of our guys in charge of counting the votes and 'accidentally' undercount votes for Democrats" thing. Even if you jump through all the hoops necessary to get the ID necessary to be allowed to cast a ballot, it would be all for nothing if your ballot is shredded instead of counted.

It's all part of the same scam: there is no actual voter fraud beyond some negligible instances that usually always get exposed.

But insisting that there is, and then addressing it with laws that amount to voter suppression gets the job done in the eyes of Republicans  - even if they lose some of their own voters, they assume that it will affect Democratic Party voters more.

My guess is:

1. They want some sort of exact name matching bullshiat that means Mr García can't vote because the electoral roll entry is for Mr Garcia.

2. They want a whole raft of absolute bullshiat voter restriction and counting laws that have low approval outside of the openly fascist crowd, but want the discussion in the media to center on a moderately popular and reasonable sounding policy.

As I read that, all you have to do is pinkie swear you're who you say you are (sign an "ID confirmation statement"), and you're in.

You're being disingenuous, as usual.

Because the thing is, there are many things that can be used as ID to prove who you are in the state of VA.  But the Republicans want to go back to the old ways where there is an extremely narrow number of ID's that can be used.  Hell, I almost expect to see them come up with some way to bring back poll taxes and literacy tests before the next election.

This is a long running motif in American history, unfortunately:  for white folks to get along - so, called "national unity" -- African Americans have to be ignored, largely.

That is, the "unity" comes from an agreement that everything in America, outside of immigration, taxes and regulations, is A-OK.

Which requires ignoring all ongoing civil rights battles. It means ignoring the Electoral College, Filibuster Reform, etc - anything that addresses the structural imbalances that have preserved current arrangements.

Tell you what: I'd support voter ID laws if:

A. State issued IDs were free, because anything more would be a poll tax, which is unconstitutional.

2. Came from a well-funded office in which o could walk in and out with my ID in less than five minutes, or get them mailed out to my house overnight.

The GOP didn't win in a landslide. The Democrats (as usual) can't bother to vote more often than once every four years. Biden had 800k more votes in 2020 than McAuliffe got in 2021.

The biggest impediment to electing more Democrats isn't Republicans. It is Democrats being stupid.

My 16 year extreme liberal lesbian daughter said that she wouldn't vote for Biden in 2024 because he is really just a Republican. Why yes - both mom and dad lost their shiat.

Walker: ToastmasterGeneral: This is all fine through 2023.  Because the Democratic Senate will (thankfully) kill off all of these bills.  BUT, the 2023 midterms will be absolutely critical.

Virginians, mark it on you calendar and VOTE.

I love this lady. L. Louise Lucas. President Pro tempore, Senate of Virginia.
Part of the Senate blue wall stopping Youngkin and the House from passing their insane laws.
Follow her on Twitter even if you don't live in VA, just for her attitude:

Solid!

I've met (former) Speaker Filler-Corn, but never met Senator Lucas.  Would like to!

KCinPA: Why would something need to be mailed overnight? Is voting so unimportant? Do people become aware 2 days before an election deadline that they don't have an ID orca utility bill?

Do you realize minorities think your an idiot for thinking they can't obtain an ID of any sort?

At least they know the difference between "your" and "you're."
