Really helps to remember how out of touch some of these MBA types are when hearing about the newest valuation of some tech bro company.

Well, Wharton is no longer known for turning out top-shelf graduates. What were you expecting?

2022-01-21 9:23:30 AM
That's really out of touch

I was a pretty stupid person at age 18 but I had a job and knew what stuff cost

If the economy collapses these kids are gonna be the first to die in the new world order

The person who did the survey said that this is not out of alignment with the rest of the US.

The Harrisburg station wasn't sure its viewers knew what Wharton was, and believed that Penn is a state institution.

Meatsim1: College kids out of touch with the realities of working people, news at 11

One college kid saying $800k, 25% saying 6 figures, which leaves 75% of them unmentioned.  Follow up at 11:30.

What. You plebes aren't making 800K? Gross, I think I need a shower just being in the same thread as you poors. And it'll be a golden shower!

Been posted at least twice now. Nothing the Fark Politburo loves more than greening a story that makes the rich look bad. If you have an anti-cop or Trump is in legal trouble story that's also usually good for an insta-green.

I remember when this came out.  I was still Republican and struggling financially.  It broke me that my party was so out of touch that they thought this was normal.

2022-01-21 9:34:23 AM
As someone who teaches at a top business school, this seems really...off to me. I absolutely believe that there are out-of-touch students at Wharton. But this also smells like one of those situations where you survey high school kids about their sexual proclivities, and a few of them report farking goats multiple times a day just to be funny. Wharton has undergraduate students too, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of these responses are from 19-year-olds who are messing with their professor.

I think asking what the federal poverty levels are would be better. or ask what poverty means to them.

The professor's Twitter profile photo was pretty much what I expected.

Again? That's like $1.6mil per year!

""A lot of people want to conclude that this says something special about Wharton students- I'm not sure it does," she said. "People are notoriously bad at making this kind of estimate, thinking the gap between rich and poor is smaller than it is." " - TFA

And there lies the bigger societal issue.

People are numb to poverty issues because the 'average American' makes far less than anyone cares to realize.

And well-to-do college kids' perspective is skewed even more because their understanding of 'average' is based on other well-to-do people and expectations.

We're encouraged to get businesses involved in our research, but I haven't met an MBA who wasn't anything other than a complete an utter self-important twat.

I grew up with my very Republican father constantly telling us that if they took every dollar away from everyone in the country, and made them start all over again, from nothing, on an equal footing, all the rich people would be rich again within a couple of years, and all the poor people would remain poor.  I believed it at the time, and I believe my father heard this nonsense from Reagan.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.  The simple answer is though, that if you removed money and privilege away from the elites, and made them start all over again, about a third of them would do okay, because they have knowledge and reputation that would get people to follow them, about a third of them would struggle the rest of their lives, and the remaining third wouldn't make it past the first winter.

Also, if you make $260,000 and pay over $70,000 in income tax, you're not very good at being upper middle class.

Now ask them how many unarmed Black men are gunned down by police in a year or what tax rates businesses pay and see how accurate those answers are. People, particularly college kids, aren't very well informed.

Years ago I worked with a young lady whose parents were friends with our bosses bosses boss. So I guess they decided when she needed a taste of what it was like to work around us filthy poors. Damn she lived a sheltered life and when she got her first check she was surprised how little it was and was asking how many months until she got her raise and bonus, that got us a laugh. The best out of touch moment was when one of the guys had gotten into a car wreck and his car was totaled and we were doing the math about getting a new car and she pretty much came down and said something like that he should get his parents to get him a new car like hers did after she wrecked her car and hers got him a new BMW. We just kind of stared and blinked at her.

This is the correct answer right here.

When I was that age, I had no idea what a typical income was. To my parents, talking of money was just not done. This is a real disservice to children. They should be involved in household budgeting from preschool age, as appropriate. Just like if you want to produce adults who can cook and clean, you start them off with age-appropriate tasks when they are children, so too should parents explain about income, living costs, savings, and so on.

How so?

There really aren't that many tax shelters available if your income is mostly W2, especially now that SALT is capped.  I make more than that and still end up claiming the standard deduction...

That hypothetical includes $35K in investment income but they are apparently not benefitting from long term capital gains' lower tax rate. Beyond that, child tax credit, child care deductions, mortgage interest, state tax deductions and the like should take a big bite out of the AGI. Is she saving for her children's college tuition? Retirement savings? Deductible work expenses?

SALT is capped, mortgage interest rates have been super duper low and child tax credits (among other things) have income limits.  Again, I make a lot more than $260k and I get 401k deductions and the standard deduction and that's pretty much it.  I'd need a much bigger mortgage to generate enough interest payments to get over the standard deduction.

If your income is pass-through from an LLC or S-corp that's a different story, but highly paid professionals with mostly W2 income are gonna end up paying what they pay.
