For an album full of cover songs, "I Love Rock & Roll" is pretty good. But then, I also like albums like "Diver Down", and "The Spaghetti Incident". I like it when someone does a good cover of a song.

For some unknown reason Joan Jett was put on the playbill for The Police Picnic in 1982 (a big concert in Toronto) along side other "hard rock" acts like Oingo Boingo, The Spoons, A Flock of Seagulls, the English Beat, and Talking Heads. The crowd wasn't very receptive of her being there.

Joan Jett had to have been the first woman I ever regarded as "cool."  I have a lot of Joan Jett in my collection.  I have my curated playlists, local files on my phone and iPod Touch.  Always happy when one of her songs comes up.

I had to look it up because I knew several labels would not release this song and ultimately she and Kenny Laguna had to put together their own label to get it out.  23 labels rejected her and this song.

Saw Joan Jett twice, at small venues.  The first thing you notice about her is that she is TINY.  I mean 5-foot-nuthin, maybe 90 pounds tops.  But when she's on a stage, man, there's no question who's in charge.

/CSB: At one of the small-venue shows (at the Tangier in Akron - RIP), she used only one pick throughout the whole show, and at the end she tossed it out to the crowd.  People dived for it but I came up with it.  Showed it to her after the show and she said "Good catch!"  I still have it somewhere.

I remember it well. I fondly recall waiting for my bus in the Greyhound station in London Ontario in the spring of 82 and playing this song on the jukebox and watching everyone over 30 leave.

It. Was. Magical.

We saw Joan and the Blackhearts at a venue on Gratiot and 8 mile area back in '81. We'd seen the videos on MTV and thought it would be a decent show, my sisters boyfriend had given us the background on the Runaways and Joan and Cherie, et al. It was a pretty good show, as someone upthread mentioned it was clear Joan was in charge of that band and I recall that being kind of off-putting to some of the mostly-dudes crowd. I don't know why that sticks out to me now, likely my sister overheard something at the bar and got on a rampage about it once we were safely in the car on the way home. At any rate, it was cool seeing JJBH's when they were just starting their rise.

That was the first "adult" song I ever loved.  Before that it was all Disney tunes and stuff like The Chipmunks.  After that, it was all Van Halen and later, GnR.  A nice upgrade.

Thanks Joan!

I believe that is the great Eric "Roscoe" Ambel on guitar, also of the Del-Lords, The Yayhoos, Steve Earle and The Dukes, and producer of albums by, well, pretty much everyone who ever made an Americana album.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Ambel

Coincidentally, his first solo album was released on streaming services today.

The Dynamite Monkey: I believe that is the great Eric "Roscoe" Ambel on guitar,

I'm not so sure - I think he's the guitar on Crimson and Clover, but its Ricky Byrd on I Love Rock n Roll. There was a lineup change right around the recording of that album.

I've also heard that the solo is actually Ace Frehley of Kiss (it sure sounds like him) but he would have fessed up by now if it really was.
