(The Hill)   FBI charges 4 Belarussian officials with "conspiracy to commit aircraft piracy" . Which sounds way cooler than "diverting a flight with a false bomb threat so you can arrest a dissident journalist who was on it "   (thehill.com) divider line

The four officials - Leonid Mikalaevich Churo, Oleg Kazyuchits, Andrey Anatolievich Lnu and Fnu Lnu - were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit aircraft piracy. The U.S. Attorney's Office said they are based in Belarus but remain at large.

Oh no, not the Lnus! They're a heap of fnu.

The indictment noted that the purpose of the flight being diverted was to arrest a Belarusian journalist and political activist who had been living in Lithuania in exile and was critical of the Belarusian government. Authorities also wanted to arrest his girlfriend.

Surely the sign of a reputable government.

The crack reporters at the Hill couldn't even be bothered to mention the name of the journalist, who is Raman Pratasevich. Interesting story around him in general.

Yes, it made me think of that too. That is a classic. They're great names but there's something about Bang Ding Ow which is the perfect punchline for that gag, IMHO anyway.

No, probably not. I wouldn't have room to keep it.

Hostile boarding from another airborne plane would have been way cooler and more appropriately matched the description of the charges.

/and no, not like that stupid Kurt Russel-Steven Segal movie.

Also, Belarus has been a scourge of the skies for over 25 years.

So was the flight diverted? If not why was it not? Did the pilot make the choice? I have some many questions, why was so much left out of the article?

Yes, it was. Yes, the journalist was arrested. Yes, the pilot had to do it.

Yes. The pilots were told there was a "credible threat" of a bomb on the aircraft and ordered to land at a specific airport for the safety of the flight as it passed near the country.

Also there was an armed MiG-29 "escorting" it to the airport it had been ordered to land at.

Belarus is about to pay a very high price for the Russians coming to their aid, protecting their country.  They always seem to stay around when it's time to go back home.

The outrageous and risky act of Belarus forcing a plane to land because of a false terror attack is one of those things the Russian empire doesn't like.  It prefers to treat journalists its own way.

And their buddies the Russians assassinated Polish leaders by blowing up their aircraft and shot down a Dutch airliner trying to pin it on Ukrainian guerrillas.

If it involves an American, and there were American passengers on that plane, then yes.   Which, as an American, I find somewhat reassuring

I'm sure Belarus will get right on that.

As an American, I find the prospect of China charging Americans with what they consider "crimes" that happen here because a Chinese person was nearby to be a bit distressing. If we can do it, so can they.

It's one of the reasons why piracy is universally frowned upon by everyone except pirates.

No worries comrade, we change name of you.

I thought that was Kazakhstan - maybe both places?  In which case, they both have more problems now, unless they are OK working for Vlad.
