(Missed submitting a thread last week - I was busy patching servers.)

2022-01-20 7:34:52 PM
I was surprised by Blip's 'flywheel catapult'.  It worked better than I thought it would.

First up - HyperShock vs. Slammo!

2022-01-20 8:09:53 PM
Well, *that* was one-sided.  All HyperShock, all the time.

2022-01-20 8:13:25 PM
Hypershock dominated that fight

2022-01-20 8:15:25 PM

desertgeek: Hypershock dominated that fight

Absolutely!  But while Slammo is an interesting idea, and well executed, a grappler bot just can't match the damage of a good high-speed kinetic weapon.

No. 2 - Valkyrie vs. P1.

2022-01-20 8:20:29 PM
I have to root for P1 just for the paint scheme

BunkyBrewman: I have to root for P1 just for the paint scheme

Yeah, the paint scheme is beautiful.

But Valkyrie is an awesome bot.

Fire!

2022-01-20 8:24:55 PM
I have a hard time watching a robot fighting game without Craig Charles emceeing, but what the hell

2022-01-20 8:25:23 PM
I don't know which way this one should go

2022-01-20 8:26:32 PM
I love the Citgo colors on the one bot

2022-01-20 8:27:48 PM
P1!!!!

That was a pretty good bout

BunkyBrewman: P1!!!!

I caught the highlights and the decision and it looked pretty entertaining

2022-01-20 8:29:34 PM
That seemed a bit disappointing.  I keep hoping Valkyrie will get it dialed in, but I can't argue with the decision.

No. 3 - rookie Riptide vs. Huge.

2022-01-20 8:31:07 PM

AntoninusPies: Fire!

Nothing like the volcanic matches in Week 1, though.

cameroncrazy1984: I have a hard time watching a robot fighting game without Craig Charles emceeing, but what the hell

I always thought it was funny that they had Lister hosting Robot Wars, and Kryten hosting Junkyard Wars...

2022-01-20 8:33:57 PM
Riptide's an egg beater.  Not innovative, but most likely effective if built well.

Lister was literally the only reason I watched Robot Wars back in the day. I was channel surfing and crossed PBS late one night and he was doing his intro. Hooked.

Yep.  I quickly came to hate their house bots and the way they used them, though.

2022-01-20 8:36:40 PM
Huge might be a threat if it could ever get any traction.

2022-01-20 8:39:51 PM
And, as I said...

2022-01-20 8:41:32 PM
Some will say that's a surprise. But I've never been a fan of Huge's design.

No..4 - Cobalt vs. Fusion.

Is it a....big surprise?

Well, Huge is interesting in that it was something very different, and 'death from above' has much to recommend it.  But it was most effective when it had the shock of novelty.

People have learning how to deal with Huge faster than Huge has been coming up with new surprises.

And Huge's absolutely-no-traction wheels might be it's biggest weakness.

Do you know why they designed them that way?

Well, Cobalt seemed durable - at first...

The idea originally was that soft, flexible wheels would be harder for opponents to damage.  And it worked, at first.  But opponents adapted, and Huge didn't keep pace.

No. 5 - Black Dragon vs. Icewave.  I don't think I know how to call this.  The only Internal Combustion Engine bot in Battlebots history.  This one could be quite a show.

Ohh that's interesting. The idea that flexibility = durability. But then you have to evolve to keep pace.

I remember someone fighting IceWave and "RUD"-ing it to the point where I could not identify the engine block in the carnage.

Yeah, the thought was that the wheels would get hit, gracefully bend instead of breaking, and then spring back.

... Aggressive Dragon there.

No. 6 - Witch Doctor vs. DUCK!  I'm thinking Witch Doctor.  DUCK! is damn durable, but is too light on damage.

And (I think) Witch Doctor got its most necessary debugging done last year.

How effective are the flippers really? Seems like they only deal damage under very specific circumstances.

2022-01-20 9:24:08 PM
Defender did not defend very well.

Well, Bronco and Hydra have been seen to toss 250 lb bots 13 feet up into the air and crack the Plexiglass in the BattleBox, so I'd say they *can* be very effective.

Witch Doctor.....bleah

That's one thing I really liked about Tombstone.  No stupid farking costumes and props, just a bit that kicks ass.

(DUCK! is not powered anything like Bronco or Hydra, though)

Looks like Duck has been playing defense for so many years, they don't know how to attack.

We might have our first Split Decision of the season here.

Well, it's show business.  Some teams go in for visible glitz, others play wrestling-style 'personally' Good Guy or Bad Guy games.  Producers may lean on them to amp that.  And some folks might be trying to sway the selection committee by making for "Good TV".

2022-01-20 9:35:08 PM
Nope, not a split decision.

2022-01-20 9:37:51 PM
No. 7 - LockJaw vs. Copperhead.  If that one's a KO, that'll be three shows straight with 5 KOs and 2 Unanimous Decisions.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood: Nope, not a split decision.

And rightly so. Witch Doctor was more dominant and did more clear damage. Duck only got one good shot in, IMO.

Yep.  DUCK! has a lot of fans, but it's crying for an effective weapon.

So - R. Daneel Olivaw vs. Cmdr. Data?

Or go *real* old school with Adam Link vs. Jay Score.  (Those two might actually be obscure on Fark.)
