I miss decent pizza places near DC. Alexandria, Virginia used to have a pizza place called Generous George's that, surprisingly, didn't have great pizza. What they DID have were bread/pasta bowls bigger than a cow's head and pizza that didn't skimp on the toppings. The atmosphere of the place is what made it.

These days, everyone wants to be a boutique pizza place with limited fancy toppings, dreadfully expensive prices, and no sense of fun. There's a place near Dupont Circle that doesn't even sell large pizzas - everything is a single serving pizza. That's not what pizza is about.

yw. I used to pay $1 for a plain slice. Adjusted for inflation thats $2. Its now $7 something

Then again, adjusted for inflation my Berkeley tuition was $2700/yr. Now its $14.3

Then Berkeley's tuition may have actually gone down a bit.  My daughter graduated in 2020 (unfortunately for her--not the most fun year to be a college senior!) and I'm pretty sure I was paying a bit more than that her last couple of years.

I am old, as is my wife.  We each went to our own state's public universities (Berkeley for her, and the University of Nevada for me) and for each of us our tuition was less than $500 per semester.

I remember Generous George's!  I ate there several times back when I was only traveling down here occasionally for business!  It was definitely a quirky sort of place, all right.

Now I live in Annandale.  We've got some decent regional chains (Vocelli), a number of VPN-certified places (have you tried Pupatella or Pizzeria Orso), and a few pretty good Mom 'n Pop places.

I just spotted 'Duccini's', near Bailey's Crossroads, and am looking forward to trying them.  There's a Duccini's in Arlington, too.

I went to Generous George's Positive Pizza Palace a few times back at the original place when I was in high school (early 90s) and my dad lived near there.  I remember them for their huge serving sizes and quirky pizzas (like lettuce on top of their taco salad pizza).  Pasta was served on top of a pizza crust.  Drinks were served in massive brandy snifter / fishbowl type glasses.

For a while, there were a few other places (there was one down Telegraph road, not quite all the way to the Coast Guard Listening Station), and I think at least one of them outlasted the original location.

But they didn't have the same soul.  The original place I think was two buildings and a lot between them that had been roofed over, with bright murals on all of the walls.  The other places tried, but it felt more like a 'we're trying to be quirky' like a Chewy's or a TGI Fridays, and not as organic as the original.  (Probably because they were in strip malls and such, rather than rehabed buildings in Old Town Alexandria)

It feels weird to be on a place like this and hear people talk about the place I live in. If I weren't such a closeted shut-in freak I'd almost like to visit y'all.
