Good God to people hate that commercial. Having worked in advertising, I found a subreddit for "Commercials I Hate" on my own. It was a small, close-knit community. Then that commercial came out and it was flooded with newcomers, all hating that ad in particular.

Everyone definitely thinks there's no reason he would have gotten her a Peloton other than he thinks she's fat.

Apparently there is a limit to how many people can be duped into paying a subscription for a clothes rack.

A $2000 stationary bike and $60 a month to use it? Why won't people buy it anymore?

On the bright side, if they were selling them off cheap I'd consider one.

I'd like to think that a social aspect and gameifying of exercise might encourage me.

Peloton ran on the same idea that every fitness guru has for the past 50 years.

"This time it's different!"

Americans love sitting on their fat asses.  It's a fact of life.  Whether it's Susan Powter claiming to 'Stop the Insanity' or a stationary bike that connects you to other delusional people, it's all a scam to make you think that fitness is just one credit card swap away.

But hey, it looks nice in the background of your Zoom meeting, I guess.

//I tried a Peloton over the Christmas holiday.  Nothing but annoying 'coaches' and horrendously bad house music from what I could see.  Putrid.

Well, their product is completely useless. They don't sell bikes, they sell subscriptions. Anyone can just pedal a stationary bike and watch a video for free. So many people just give them away, and basically everyone can watch YouTube while they pedal. And not many people can actually afford many media subscriptions.

They should transition to accessories for the Peloton. Like clothes hangers.

All of the hate in this thread is just reflective of how Farkers are not the target audience. Fat, middle-age, balding white men who spend all day on computers hate exercise, who would have thought!

Peloton is supposed to be a substitute for in-person spin classes. Young, fit women like to combine exercise with socialising, and so it should theoretically fill that niche perfectly. Unfortunately, the "socialising" part is definitely wanting when your only interaction is with the coach rather than going out for Starbucks coffees after class and drinking more calories than you burned while you gossip about your children, husbands, or friend who never shows up to spin class.

Not surprised that they're in trouble, but the need to actually halt production is a major fark up. If you wanted to do this right you would connect the bikes with other machines (not just treadmills but weight stacks and rowers and the like) to create a full-bore athlete training capability that goes above and beyond socialising lite. Bring in 1:1 coaches who train you around the machines and automatically keep track of your progress. Almost like Uber for the gym; connect some fat slob in the middle of nowhere in flyover country to a coach in NYC, and take a cut of the hourly rate. A system like that might be of interest even for me, and I hate working out with other people.

Exercise equipment and diets are fad products for 95% of people and Americans love their fads. They'll buy anything thinking it will just do the magic while skipping the work. Once they find out the magic doesn't work, they give up and start looking for the next fad.

I enjoy my Peloton. Keeps me motivated.  As far as the stock, it might be time to bail. I've lost about $750 at this point, and it looks like the company is about to tank.  Oh well.  Win some, lose some

Nick Nostril: They should transition to accessories for the Peloton. Like clothes hangers.

Let's be honest, the guy was probably an ass man and just wanted to watch his wife's ass in yoga pants while she rode the bike.  He put the bike in the living room because he wanted to smell that sexy stink that hot chicks get with moderate exercise*.  If you want to sell a subscription/accessory, then just sell a chick with a nice ass who comes and rides the bike in your house with some cover story that makes it not creepy.

Uh, Stacey needs to come over and ride the bike every day to make sure it stays properly lubricated.  I need to be here watching intently because I'm her spotter.  I'll need to get back to you with a response as to why I'm not wearing pants.

My wife is a runner, who needs to train year-round for marathons. If I bought her a fancy treadmill (and she didn't already have one), she'd be happy.

If she wasn't a runner, and I dropped a couple grand on an expensive treadmill, she'd be right to kick me square in the nuts before shopping divorce lawyers.

Only saw the commercial once, but I don't remember the woman having her character established as some competitive cyclist. That's just Grade-A passive-aggressive shiat right there.

As for Peloton itself, I'm not surprised they're finally collapsing. Their products are sub-par. You can buy commercial equipment for less. Peloton is literally a brand for the idle rich.

Because there's no repeat business?

I mean, workout equipment lasts forever, it hasn't really changed in function or utility in decades, and most people don't use it nearly enough to warrant frequently replacing it anyway.

So once everyone has bought one -- then what? Where's the company going to find new customers? Planned obsolescence is not the exercise industry's forte. A bike is not an iphone. It doesn't wear out like shoes. There's no room for growth.

Nevermind the numerous advertising farkups that were so frequent and regular you'd think it was part of their promotion strategy.

Not a bad start... if you wanna be stuck in the Internet of Things stone age. Here in Web 3.0, the real money to be made is in buying and selling NFTs of individual workouts.

This. No one "motivating" you. It's really a game and you and your bike are the controller. You can slow roll the countryside solo, climb a 4000 foot mountain, do structured training, ride in a casual group, or go all out in a race.

Hmm. All those analysts and all that hype. I wonder why nobody saw this coming? How could a stock lose 80% of its value in such a short period of time?

The answer is obvious. Modern "analysts" have no idea what they are doing. Everyone is just trend following and nobody cares. Nobody audits anything. It is all just fluff and bluster.

Note that nobody is being sued for hiding information. Supposedly everyone had all the information necessary to predict this, and yet nobody did, apparently.

Where are the bears? Does that seem odd to anybody? How can an 80% drop occur if people were short covering all the way down? I am going to guess that there were no shorts, or very few.

This next bear cycle is going to be a doozy.

It's really easy to gameify anything you do. Just use the Principal Skinner stratagem: Record whatever it is you're doing (how high/fast/far/much/etc), and then try to beat that record. Keep a log so you can admire your progress over time. The only true competitor is yourself.

Correct, along with the basement dwellers/Farkers who consider picking up the remote to be a workout.

I like spin and I like riding outdoors. I tried Zwift with a smart trainer and just couldn't get into it.

It's almost like people have different preferences or something.

Any suggestions for set of rollers for bikes with 27" wheels? My bikes (plural) are 40 yrs. old, but were pretty decent at the time. I didn't braze the frames, but I laced and trued the wheels, and used middle range components (Shimano, but not Campagnolo). I nearly died when I was recently in a bike shop and looked at the price tags for what I thought were comparable rides. I have a ton of spare parts for mine, so I guess I will have them forever. i would like to ride in the winter, but outdoors is a non-starter.

I've have Tacx rollers; they're adjustable and work great I think. Just have a fan going.
