This was my parent's era of music, so I heard a lot of it while growing up.  This album, in particular, was a favorite. It's a collection of live performances. I pretty much wore it out as a kid, and bought the CD years ago.

I always am.  My grandparents had their big RCA console at their beach house in Florida and as soon as we arrived, I'd turn it on, wait for the tubes to warm up, and then play Pennsylvania 65-000 from Big Band Memories.

It became "The Sound Of The Beginning of Florida Vacation" to me.  Granted, this was all in the 90's/2000's.

Think 'Big Band' music is boring? Gene Krupa might be the first modern rock and roll drummer.

He's probably not 'In the Mood' for much more than a nap.

Happy century, music man.

I was lucky enough to see Harry James and his big band circa 1981.

Dude was playing with one lung.

I was lucky enough to see Count Basie and his orchestra shortly before he died in the early 80s. Really amazing.

My dad was a jazz musician.  "In the Mood" was one of the standards his band would play at his gigs, so it's one of those that's etched into my mind.

Guess he missed the flight.

While I love so much of his stuff, including In the Mood and A String of Pearls this is one of my favorite pieces

Tyrosine: Are you In the Mood for some Big Band memories?

I'll pass. Not really in the mood to listen to the music my parents were conceived to.

Maybe CSB?

I've been trying to find a way to use my old tube radios.
These do work on the AM band. But AM band is full of talk shows.

So I decided to build a simple AM transmitter so I could listen to music.

I finally was able to listen to music on one of my bigger sets. For something that is nearly 100 years old, it plays wonderfully. So seeing this made me think how some of the big band music must have sounded on that good old radio back in the day.

There is a station out of Havana, Radio Enciclopedia, on 530, almost all music, primarily orchestral renditions.  With a tube radio, one that will fill a room, it's an experience that should not be missed.  That must have been what radio was like once upon a time, before boardrooms determined to limit our choices and accountants determined to limit the audio quality.

Yeah, even FM radio is bad at times. a few songs then tons of adverts. But yes, I was surprised how well music can be on an older radio.

I don't think Ray Anthony's on this one, it's hard to keep track with such a huge volume of work from the Miller band in such a short period, but I adore Marion Hutton. She started taking voice lessons and Miller told her to quit so she wouldn't screw up what she was already doing just fine.

Big band music fans love In the Mood way too much and big band musicians are sick of playing it. There's a reason the USAF bandsmen I knew back in the day refer to that song as "ITFM"...
