I got to drive one once. Once. in 1988. Around a mall parking lot. In first gear. It was still very cool. It was the car that Darth Vader would drive. And yes, it was utterly ridiculous because it was supposed to be utterly ridiculous.

I think that's the normal state of propulsion.

But for those 8 days a year when it's working. I bet its still brilliant to drive

When I was a kid I saw one parked behind a fence in my hometown. I went home and got my camera, came back and started taking photos like the dumb kid I was. Owner came out and asked if I'd like to sit in it. Made my week.
Now it's just a bad csb on Fark that I cringe a little thinking about.

I mean, I don't see the cringe there.

There is a stunning Aston Martin parked outside the Ritz that I walk past every day and I really should take some pictures.

It amazes me that the entire exotic car industry is based around amazing automobiles that are completely unreliable and almost undrivable.

I remember reading a review of some car, I think it was the Diablo, and the reviewer said the maintenance costs averaged out to a "very reasonable" sixteen dollars per mile.  Unless you just had stupid money like Bezos or something, why would you want something that basically needs an overhaul after every trip out?

The high end cars just aren't designed to be driven.

At least not daily. They're something you take out once a year for a few miles then back into the climate control exhibition garage

Not at all, that's great.

When I was a "kid" (in college) studying in London, I passed a street-parked Ferrari F430 in front of a cafe. This was odd, as the car wasn't due to come out until the next year. I pulled out my camera and started snapping, and this caught the eye of a guy in the window of the coffeeshop the car was parked in front of. The car's lights blinked twice and the horn chirped so I looked up, and the guy was holding his keys and smiling. I waved, and mouthed "sorry, cool car", at which point the car chirped again and the guy started waving me back towards it. I waved again, figuring he was just giving me permission to take more pictures when he stepped outside and said "did you want to get in, see the interior?" I said sure, so he told me to open the door and sit down. Took a few more and thanked the guy, he said it was fun to show the car to someone who realized that it wasn't "just another Ferrari", so I asked how he got it ahead of schedule. He smiled and said "that would be telling, wouldn't it?" and walked back into the shop.

And thanks to the sudden boom in the classic car market, it's worth a heck of a lot more than he paid for it so the self proclaimed "dumbest automotive channel on YouTube" actually made a smart investment for once.

Honestly, I didn't.  I never really cared for the look of it.

The only posters I had on my walls were maps of the Moon, Mars, and the constellations.  I figured I had a better chance of visiting them vs. owning a Lamborghini.

Zero cringe. I'd still be elated today if given a chance to sit in one, and if I saw one in the neighborhood right now I'd take pictures of it, too. That car was damn near science fiction in its day and it STILL looks like something from the future. It's one of the most legendary Lambo's of all time. You had a cool experience.

I've done a thing in Vegas where you got to take a few supercars out into the desert and just go medium levels of crazy with them.

A nice Jag that I don't remember, Audi R8 V10, Ferrari 458 Italia and some version of Bentley Continental Super Sport.

Nearly spun the Bentley at an intersection that had a bump. And backed off the Ferrari at about 115mph because common sense kicked in.

Fun couple of hours.

I had 2 posters - one of a red '70 442 and a hand-drawn replica of In The Court of the Crimson King album cover. Mom took down the classic Farrah Fawcett poster my younger brother had, but somehow let my older brothers NORML poster stay up.

The Farrah poster is supposed to go under the 442 poster, which you leave untaped at the bottom for easy access.

The NSX changed all that, in 1991. I'm told the Huracan or Aventador actually became a car that could last 150k+ miles.

Kinda sad about that. Sometimes you just want a car that made you go 'Wow!' even though you could never afford them, the maintenance is ridiculous, and me, at 6' 2" would never fit inside a coupe. The Countach is a silly car. The Huracan and Aventador are a bit serious.

I'd still take one in a heartbeat, obviously.

But it's not bad for a design that's more than 40 years old.

0-60 Time of a Toyota Tundra - 4.4 seconds

Yes, it will, to 60 in a straight line, at least. The Countach was an amazing car for its time, but it's not even a mid engine sports car these days in terms of performance.
