A talking filibuster is the minimum amount of change you can advocate for and still say with some plausibility that you support voting rights. If you can't even bother to support the talking filibuster, don't tell me you're totally on board with voting rights

Damn.  I was looking forward to Ted Cruz standing there and reading Mein Kampf in the original German.

Much as I would love to watch any one of those assholes try to hold their water for 24 hours, this is WAY too little anyway.

I was looking forward to Manchin pissing himself.

Longest filibuster was 75 hours. Southern Democrats against the 1964 civil rights bill.

I think the smallest possible change would be eliminating anonymous holds. You want to hold up a bill, you put your name out there.

2022-01-19 2:22:56 PM
Because it walks in and looks like work which is not why she became a senator.

2022-01-19 2:28:10 PM
She's bought and paid for.

So's Manchin to be fair here.

Hell, if you're going to cling to "tradition" and "original rules" and shiat like that, then yes, you need to stand there and literally hold the floor to filibuster. Changing the rules to where you can just say, "Filibuster," and everyone has to go home is total BS. If you are against a bill so passionately that you want to kill it, then you'd better be prepared to make a stand to make it happen.

But, of course, that is asking a lot from the members of the World's Easiest JobTM.

And they then went to a political party where they don't have to filibuster for removal of civil rights.

A) What does the southern strategy have to do with it?
2) The longest filibuster was 75 DAYS, not hours.
iii) The longest individual filibuster was 24 hours and 18 minutes, until Strom Thurmond's bladder couldn't take it any more in 1957.

As someone pointed out.  Requiring 60 votes for cloture (instead of a talking filibuster) is in effect asking for government in secret.  It is a way of ensuring those blocking a bill (like voters rights) are not even known to the public.

I knew early on she was absolutely full of shiat but this removes any plausible deniability that she isn't.

It's like Sinema watched a gif of John McCain thumbs-downing the healthcare repeal a dozen or so times and assumed that's all it takes to be a Senator...

Precisely.

This is vile.

A talking filibuster. Now and going forward. For any filibuster.

It's be worth giving a couple republicans some sweetheart backroom deal on something they want just to get the rules changed as such. Go right around these two and make Senators put do the work they were elected to perform.

They must have really, really not liked "others".
Much as I suspect it is the same today with those who still oppose a voting rights bill.

Of course, when that happens, the Democrats will decide that the filibuster is an essential piece of equity and democracy and it would be nothing short of racism to abolish it.

THIS.

We are seeing how one person can easily be bought and paid for by lobbyists hamstring any sort of progress. Worse, Republicans then get to use this to fundraise n how divided the do-nothing Democrats are as they sharpen their knives For November.

Far as I'm concerned, these two get absolutely nothing they want from Congressional leadership going forward without giving up massive chunks of what the rest of us want.

Block all you want, jackasses. But from now on nothing you want goes anywhere without some horse-trading.

So what's next? Are we still doomers and Eeyores for considering the likelihood of a fascist government coming our way?
