fragMasterFlash: What's a mall?

It's a giant building filled with empty stores that can be used to film police chases in, but that's not important right now.

"Well, you see, this mall will have jobs that these low income residents can work at and, thus, pull themselves to better house by their bootstraps.

Chex Quest, Libs."

But Gordon said it's wrong to think of the demolished motels as lost housing, given the state of disrepair of many of the units....As of February, an estimated 2,550 people lived in Reno's weekly motels, which have become de facto housing of last resort. While many are in poor condition, ProPublica found others that were well-managed and well-kept motels - some of which Jacobs has also tried to buy - that were a critical resource for those seeking shelter in the city's difficult housing market.

America's low-income housing problem in a nutshell. They weren't good places to stay by any measure; but they were the only places to stay. And now they're gone.

"We're going to tear down existing affordable housing and replace it with fewer, smaller units for 3x the original rent. We have the city council's greased palms full support and will be moving forward."

Sadly this is the norm, not the exception.

That would certainly make Reno more pleasant.

Weird how city councils almost never have poor people on them. So weird.

Building a mall, wow sounds like they will be making money hand over fist, make sure there are plenty of record stores there.

Developers here are determined to fill every meadow and wetland (believe it or not there are wetlands in Reno, for now at least) with either malls, townhouses, office parks or gated golf course communities.

It's weird that this is getting buried on the pol tab. This is probably Main tab material. Have a political shiatpost, I guess:

Wouldn't it be cool if most people could actually enjoy arcade quality gaming at home?

/a total pipedream, right?

Oh good, a thread full of Farkers who make fun of brick and mortar stores (and the local jobs they create) because they only ship on Amazon, while demanding people like Bezos pay a huge amounts of his wealth in taxes to hand out money to the unemployed that those Farkers helped create.

Jacobs used to be a bond trader on Wall Street and, later, a GOP rep in Ohio. Only the best people.

Kaffer countered: "So just to clarify where we are at, in the last five years 500 to 600 units have been demolished, and we don't have a timeline for when 850 units of affordable housing will be rebuilt to replace those."

I have seen developers do this time and time again - they make promises at the start of a project, but by the end of it they are unable to provide them for various reasons.  Locally we had a big development go ahead in the city's East End, lots of high scale apartments were built, they had promised to have cheap student accommodations for the local universities, but nothing "cheap" ever appeared due to financial constraints.

Yeah, I find it troubling that in talking with the developer of RED (former Park Lane Mall) and City Council, I asked who was responsible for ensuring the infrastructure could withstand the increased housing density. Both said it wasn't their responsibility and, in the time since that conversation, Virginia Street heading downtown was actually squeezed even more.
