It's amazing that awkwardly yelling in to a microphone will keep you from getting elected but being caught on a hot mike bragging about committing sexual assault will not.

I'm not sure, but I would have loved to have given him a shot. Think he definitely earned that much.

What? Losing a primary?

That scream was up there with Jeb Bush's "please clap," and Hillary's "Pokémon Go to the polls," as the all time best totally innocuous things that completely ruined a political career.

Yes, but he went on to engineer the once in a lifetime super majorities that Obama wasted.

I kid.

The scream didn't end his campaign, it was more due to him being the supposed front runner for a time, then crapping the bed an finishing 3rd in Iowa.

A Dean advisor thought they fell short in Iowa because the had way too many volunteers running around in orange hats bugging the crap out of people.  They said they rang too many doorbells too many times and pissed off the voters.

I don't get the narrative behind this.  Hell, I'd never even HEARD of him in the 2004 Election, or I might have voted for him.

And to this day, if a Democrat had that awkward moment, the "liberal" media would spend weeks talking about YYARRGATE and questioning their mental fitness.

The more than stupid thing here is that the mic was noise-cancelling. The press caught the scream in isolation but pretty much nobody in the crowd heard it.... it was just one loud voice in a crowd of loud voices.

I imagine every time Trump said something that would have been campaign-ending Howard Dean said "Are you farking kidding me!!?" in his head. Trump attacked a freaking gold star family and survived unscathed. Howard Dean was over-enthusiastic when things were going his way. Totes the same.

... buddy the folks people are pissed at for screwing Dean over the scream aren't the DNC. you have, for some reason, immediately jumped to that conclusion, 'cause that's the weird thing that you do

a lot

but that's generally not who people are pissed at. 'Cause it wasn't the DNC who played the Dean Scream over and over and over on the news.

(Now, people got pissed at the DNC *later* for abandoning Dean's 50 state strategy, but that's, like. A deacde down the line from the dean scream)

More pointedly, the *crowd* was fired up and ready to go... and the media *manipulated the audio to make him seem unhinged... and everyone from David Letterman to David Chappelle was more than happy to pile on.

*They specifically chose to air the footage with the audio from his unidirectional mic, which didn't pick up the crowd noise.  Regular monitor audio was available.  It's *plausible* that it wasn't deliberate, just extremely unlikely.

The Media did screw him in 2004 and Kerry was the DNC "favorite" so they didn't exactly help either and then the DNC screwed him in 2009 by booting him as DNC chairman after a historic victory.

That was back when I had a newspaper subscription

As long as the Electoral College significantly favors land over people, the playing field will remain tilted, and guys like Dean will already start the race behind, while guys like Trump will have an open path to the general election.

We favor rural white rich landowners' votes so much more than urban wage earners, even though the urban wage earners at this point make up about 75% of the numerical electorate.

Dean Scream or no, the fact Trump won a race and Hillary and Dean and a long list of qualified Dems could not just emphasizes the point. We're a nation locked down by our Electoral College, doing exactly what it was designed to do, promote rural landowners at the expense of urban residents.

Debbie Wasserman schultz. The perfect Clinton loyalist. She raised a fortune from Wall Street and simultaneously hemorrhaged offices across the country and across the board. So naturally they kept her on. The fact that she did try and put her thumb on the scales to favor clinton, lied about it, resigned and then within a few hours Clinton promoted her to honorary chairperson in the middle of the goddamn convention are all perfect encapsulations of how the Democrats managed to screw up.

I think you overestimate the impact of media coverage of one weird but inconsequential incident.  He didn't lose the primary because of the scream or the media coverage of it.
