China is in a mood lately. They'll have no problem turning it into a shiatshow to prove how China they are.

Any athlete behaviour that is against the Olympic spirit or Chinese rules or laws will be subject to "certain punishment", a Beijing 2022 official has said

Yeah, Tigger, calm the fark down because Pooh's angry and he'll roast you like Piglet after taking his honey.

West Taiwan is getting uppity, guess rising honey prices must be getting to the leadership.

"These people jail and kill people without any due process!!!  Hey, let go, what are you doing, I HAVE RIGHTS!!!"

It's akin to the infamous, "What are you going to do, stab me?"

Hope someone does something the Chinese don't like, and they do something stupid...but, the
willing media won't report it.

If you're competing in the games, you've already that decided personal gain and fame is more important than human rights, and the Chinese government is just reminding you about that.

ha, way ahead of you.

When this hit the news last week, I asked my wife why I didn't even know that there was an olympics happening this year; she said something about because I'm a %bad word for someone with a mental disability that rhymes with sitar if you added the letter "d" to the end%.

It'd be hilarious if several large countries worth of Olympic athletes protested at once during the games.  It'd be even more hilarious even over half of the Olympic athletes did so in unison.

It'd be righteously funny.

Maybe the closing ceremonies would be a good time for it.  All the events are over, so go ahead and protest.

They really should go back to only having the olympics every 4 years. This every-other-year stuff doesnt give us a chance to forget how boring and stupid the last olympics were.

Theyre diluting their brand.

Be a real shame if some of the more violent sects of radical Islamists decided to finally take offense to the Uiygur situation and put on show in China for all the world to see....

Except I could see China going Tiananmen on foreign athletes.  Probably best to just not send any athletes.

China's biggest Olympic tennis star. Made sexual assault allegations during #metoo against a Chinese leader and got disappeared. China is making big efforts to pretend she is fine, trotting her out under close supervision to public events. The international tennis organization pulled tournaments from china and they responded by pressuring companies that sponsor tennis events to take their money away until they bring tournaments back.

IIRC they used to do the winter and summer olympics the same year... so olympics happened every 4 years.... but then they moved them to alternate every 2 years... there will be a summer olympics and then 2 years later a winjter olympics and then 2 years later another summer olympics....  so now theeres always an olympics starting up... theres never not an olypics in the news. Theres always an olympics village being constructed somewhere, theres always a big run up to the olympics, its not a rare & special, its always and constantly a thing now.

Its tiresome.

I haven't given a shiat about the Olympics since 2002 when I bet 20 bucks in the US vs Canada hockey game. I had never bet on a sporting event before but was feeling a little national pride for some damn reason. My Canadian coworker was happy to take my money, telling me "You don't understand, man. We don't breed and train 'em. We grow our hockey players in tubes"

They should just go meet up somewhere else and have their own Olympics. With hookers and blackjack.

Things ain't looking too good fit China right now.

Aside from real estate faltering and killing their GDP, manufacturing isn't looking hit either. Ford is bringing chip manufacturing back onshore, and all of the car companies are building domestic battery plants that are sourcing rare earth minerals from across the continent.

China doesn't have a good plan for the future.

A decade ago Chinese TV seemed to consist entirely of mainland-produced patriotic films about the war against Japan -- action film, tragic romance, every film regardless of genre was set during WW2 -- and actually-entertaining Hong Kong films. I wonder if these days they have more films about fighting Americans.

For the Chinese, the olympics are not just sport.  They WILL be collecting the DNA of all the worlds super atleteats and using them for cloning Chinese super soldiers.

People competing in the Olympics do nothing BUT train for their event....if no one else is supporting them, then work is a brief diversion from their training.

Then you fail to qualify.
Or you get hurt.
4-8 years later, unless you're truly gifted at the event, you're too old to try again.

Now get on with the rest of your life...

All good examples of non-Chinese things that rule.

Organized sports have an extra chromosome.
You devoted your entire young life to chasing a ball. Wow, thats not at all idiotic.

They have nukes.  And are willing to use them.  They have a plan for the future.  Likely the US will have to bail them out or go to war.  I bet we fire up that money printer and bail them out.  Because the mega wealthy will profit the most.

They just released a 'blockbuster' movie called "The Battle at Lake Changjin," the most expensive and highest-grossing in Chinese history.

It's an epic, breathless glorification of the time 120,000 Chinese troops surrounded 30,000 UN troops in Korea and eventually forced a tactical withdrawal. To do so, they suffered ~50,000 casualties, to the UN's 18,000.

The big point of pride is that they achieved their glorious victory while under-equipped and starving.

France has a pretty solid roster with Daft Punk, Air, Stereolab, St. Etienne, and Phoenix though you can see that those particular bands all sound a lot alike and that sound is not particularly popular with Americans.  It's good music, but not something most Americans will like.

It'd have to be a mini-series for it to even approach telling a story worthy of the events but I'd love to see a Chinese produced product on the interplay between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalists once the Japanese invaded Manchuria.
