I'll be avoiding this one.

The problem is no matter how excellent this film is the people who need to understand it's message the most won't. My heart can't take it

I've all but given up after Sandy Hook. I'll still do what I can, which isn't much, but I've written this off as a lost issue, followed by deep relief I don't have children. There's a lot of that on multiple issues going around in this country.

Yeah, not sure I could take it either.

The title "If I Grow Up" is a quote from my daughter, who used the very phrase to correct an adult who had asked her, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I think you mean, if I grow up." - she was five at the time.

That slammed me and was the dark muse for the game.

We've since moved out of the US and that lifted a massive burden from us as parents, but we still feel pain for the friends we left behind.

I think the deal with "coming of age" stories is they are 100% of their times for those who did come up in that.

So really whatever that was for someone getting from 12-18, (somewhere in that time frame we get the XP to have "come of age" and "lvl up", not into adulthood exactly, but out of innocence at least).

That's quite likely to just be some whole other almost alien world to have experienced, to those who "come of age"  10-15 years later.

What it was to 'come of age" in 1990 was really different than if you had that in 1980, or 2000.

I find more or less an adult, a coming of age story is just not that interesting any more. Been there, done that. And what ti is for those today, is whatever ti is for them. I can't know it, no one can, if they are old/young enough in that moment.

i.e.
those of us in my generation did not experience the high-school life of Breakfast Club.
We saw that when we were in 6th grade. We were seeing what a current adult film maker/story teller, thought life(idealized) was like for the high schoolers of the day, while not actually being one themselves.

More or less any coming of age story is not really exactly on the button for the people who are coming of age when the film debuts. It is either a real historical look back at what that was for them.
Or it is their idea of what that is like now for the kids today but not themselves first hand xp really.
OR it is an amalgamation of the writer/director's own coming of age XP, but then attempted to be projected through a more modern of the time lenses for current times audiences.

Anyone who is actually experiencing what "coming of age" (loss of innocence) is right now today.
IS also young enough and inexperienced enough, they ain't writing the next movie script to be put on the screen, right now today as they experience it. There will be a decade or so of delay before they write that script about there experiences in those times.
"coming of age" stores are always on this time delay propagation, because by the time you are good enough at writing to put ti all down for the rest of us, that's not exactly 1:1 what the world is like for those coming of age today. It's either first hand xp, but from the past when we hear aboutor it's 3rd party interpretation of what that 1st hand xp was like.

The trailer makes it look like a rather generic 'important' movie of the week.  Now, if we move the gunshot along 30 seconds or so and have the girls go into the bathroom stall to have sex instead of hide in fear, THERE's a movie.

Well that's only dark if you make it dark.  Back in my day we proudly proclaimed, "I don't want to grow up".

/for the slower folks in the room that's because we were Toys R Us kids

The early iterations of Peter Pan are a bit disturbing.  The modern Pan we know is a distillation of what worked in terms of audience appeal.

You apparently cant tell that she probably wasnt talking about living to grow up, but never stop being a kid and turn into a boring adult kind of "if i grow up"

Well, my daughter leans more towards Wednesday Addams than Little Miss Sunshine, so, I'll stand by my interpretation.  *laugh*

Even with all the stuff being reported now, crime now is lower than it was back when we were kids. And honestly, who among us didn't go through kidnapping, narrowly dodge a kidnapping, or have a friend who had been kidnapped back then? The problem now is the media saturation and fearmongering despite being at much lower crime rates. pearls must be clutched!
I find it funny that so many concerned whi... um... whinging... yeah, so many whinging people only cared when it happened at sandy hook or columbine. You know, when the violence started spilled out of the ... um... "other" neighborhoods and into neighborhoods more like their own. Hearing gun shots and hearing about folks getting killed was just a common thing long before columbine and sandy hook. There are a lot of parallels with the drug war - it wasn't a problem until too many kids of important people were going to "bad" neighborhoods to get their supplies.
I dunno, maybe it's partially the fact that the privilege of generational wealth is real and some of us just didn't really have much of it. So i get a bit salty when those who did start deciding for those who didn't how they should live their lives.

At least we're getting a Mass Effect TV series.

I would indeed enjoy a Fallout-based show. On HBO Max, please.
