The bill reads in part, "An individual, by virtue of his or her race or sex, does not bear responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex. An individual should not be made to feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race."

But since you seem to, would you care to explain why? Most of us don't, you see.

What's the past have to do with this?   The present is full of examples of institutionalized racism and it's on the news every time a person gets shot for walking while black or driving while black or protesting while black or just sitting on the couch watching tv while black.

"Why do we need to know where we came from? It's not like driving to the closest grocery store has anything to do with where our house is located. Just start driving, there's bound to be a store somewhere."

This is fantastic, all faith schools in Florida to be shut down...right? I mean that's all about making people of other faiths feel bad because of stuff that happened thousands of years ago.

Right?

And the moment that starts applying to anyone with dark skin they will trip all over themselves to repeal it.

Someone should propose religion to be added to that, it's not like a whole religion was the purpose and justification of a travel ban in the last five years as one example. I'm sure all the jeebus lovers would have no problem following the rules they push on others.

This bill doesn't outlaw teaching racism or history. It says that individuals shouldn't be made to feel responsible or guilty about actions committed in the past by others who share the same skin color or sex.

Why does that make you uncomfortable and what specifically makes that racist?

And it certainly would have been a LOT shorter under the De Santis edits.

As an Australian I'm aware of our past is probably closer to South Africa's than the United States, so in no way am I being superior or judgy when I say this, but the US is in really crappy shape due to historical racism and its modern structural consequences. And that's not going to get better by sticking heads in the sand. The late great Bishop Tutu understood that you can't have reconciliation without truth. And if you don't want to hear the truth, you REALLY are exactly the sort of person who needs to hear the truth.

Hurt fee-fees? It's not even vaguely comparable to being kept out of certain jobs, being denied entry to certain venues, being lynched for checking out a girl of the wrong skin colour, let alone being a slave or a sexual plaything without any rights at all. It's truly pathetic.

Fark De Santis.

The bill as I'm reading it prescribes that only certain "approved" texts and materials and methods can be used in classrooms. In the case of history, a student who can regurgitate a timeline of events is a 'C' student. An 'A' student understands that history is interwoven narratives forming a complex picture. This bill is there to ensure that the sources students will learn about are only the "safe" ones, with the threat of lawsuits against teachers who introduce unapproved historical source material which someone decides hurts their feelings.

This bill is designed to pump out history students who might know some history but don't understand it and certainly can't use it to challenge orthodoxy. That's the way De Santis wants it because that's how you entrench racism.

It should make everyone uncomfortable but it certainly won't discomfort those who like the existing structural racism just the way it is and don't want it challenged.

So very 1984. We were never a racist country so don't talk about it because it makes people who are the descendants of slaveowners feel back.

Ed Gein was white.  Okay? So that doesn't necessarily reflect badly on me.

"It centers on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation's institutions and that they function to maintain the dominance of white people in society." [FTFA]

...also from the opening paragraph of the article:

"TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A bill pushed by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that would prohibit public schools and private businesses from making white people feel "discomfort" when they teach students or train employees about discrimination in the nation's past received its first approval Tuesday."

The CRT profs should start up another case study, just based on these events

You see if you ride on the coattails of other people's accomplishments and you feel good about yourself because a white guy discovered gravity or created a light bulb then it follows that you would feel bad about yourself when a white guy does something bad.  It's very pathetic and sad when people are so invested in their racial identity.

I call it the white supremacist snowflake protection bill.

Oh, good.  So now we can stop with the ridiculous assertions that all Muslims are terrorists, and stop assaulting random Asian Americans and shouting "Corona Virus" at them, and stop assuming every Latino is undocumented or in a gang, and that every black person is up to no good.

Right?  Cause that's what I'm reading in this bill.  Unless......

You don't think it will be narrowly and purposefully enforced only in "certain circumstances ", do you?

Because the discomfort at learning a less heroic version of American history is a personal problem.  Someone with a healthy sense of self doesn't have a problem with learning that others of their ilk did bad things.

Japan covered up its WWII sins when teaching history to its children.  Do we want to be like that?

Legislatively protecting someone's feelings makes zero sense. especially coming from the party of fark Your Feelings.

If you don't see the dangerous slippery slope in play, it's because you're deliberately and desperately trying not to.

Facts and history are important. The white supremacist core of America's roots is part of that. If anyone is made uncomfortable by this, fark their feelings.

If you feel uncomfortable, that's your conscience being stirred by injustice. Good.

If we all felt a bit more uncomfortable with injustice, we might be able to end it. Unfortunately, rather than holding onto that discomfort we wash it away most of the time. We feel the need to justify our privileges. But our privilege is not something we should feel guilty about, rather we should feel guilty that other people don't share it. And if we live reasonably, we can all share it. I don't mean in poverty either, if we have public goods like public health care, public education, and public transit, then we can all live better than kings of times past. Maybe public housing too. Public housing! Like in Singapore!

We just have to take care of each other and hold onto solidarity.

Does this also apply to people who make black people feel uncomfortable for being black? Cos I'd be all on board for criminalising overt racism. Let's start with the police and exempting this bill from qualified immunity.

I'm a Whitey Whiterski Canadian.

The things my country did to First Nations peoples is revolting. Massacres, broken treaties, residential schools. Even now folks of my almost-negative melanin level are ignoring the generational trauma white people have caused, and saying things like "well if you really want clean water, you can just leave the rez, right".

It's horrible, and I feel bad that it happened/is happening but I don't feel guilty. I can't control the past, but I have learned about it so that I can understand the present and work towards better in the future.
