Maybe it's the New Mexico in me, but I don't charge into standing water.  That's a good way to be carried away by the water and drown.

Where I live that would be considered a road hazard and the cops would have it blocked.

One stormy night, I hit about that much water, absolutely no warning, on a four-lane highway driving a Peugeot 405 turbo diesel full of the family at about 50 mph. It was like hitting a wall. Didn't stall and drove away, shaken.

No, and I've been there many, many times, albeit in major-ish cities and townships.
Guess I never noticed the ATV/Carhartt crowd.

it looks like that is a known, persistent state of that road. That is why there was no hesitation on the normal vehicles just driving through the water. It was the 4x4 people that felt the need to hit it at high speed for the lutz.

It seems they're a bit comfortable with this level of flooding, but I've been told all my life not to drive into water.

I got caught in a flood in Dallas. I stopped before I got to the intersection where a small river had suddenly appeared. Some old lady in a Jaguar tried to make it through. The fire department showed up with a ladder truck and rescued her. I suspect the truck was capable of getting through the flood, but they weren't willing to risk it.

They sent a couple of people out into the water tethered with safety lines.  She was saved. I wouldn't hold out much hope for the car though. At least it didn't get swept downstream so she had that going for her.

Where I live, the locals always move the designated "road closed-high water" barriers off to the side because the roads that always get river flooding during rainy spells are also everyone's favorite shortcuts.

/the flooding always manages to snare a couple suburbanites in their crossovers who think AWD makes them God

Apparently me too since I watched it.   I was expecting to see it end with an out of control vehicle and pedestrians in need of medical attention.   As it is the most attention needed was a good disinfectant bath.

There's turning your Tesla into a dune buggy Rich, and then there's making a pond/mud puddle in the desert to drive your Tesla dune buggy thru Rich.

Now they say a Tesla can float, but I'm not attempting unless it's a war of the worlds type situation.

You gotta be careful, because the driver may misread "Splash" as "Crash". They're moving fast and have to make split second decisions.

My surprise flooded road experience was on I75 heading south to Detroit. 12-18" deep pool under an overpass. Saw it in time to realize my truck could react just about any way it felt like.  It slowed me down quickly but without spinning.

Frederick MD gets flooded regularly near Baler Park now. I've had to walk home a few blocks when traffic was stopped in the road by a flash flood. ( This was a few years ago)

Yeah, not many fords left. I've driven across (and ridden across) their Texas cousins (low water crossings), but it's not quite the same thing - the Texas version is usually dry, so they don't build a bridge due to costs.  The English version is usually wet, and they don't build a bridge because they're stubborn.

I actually admire that a little bit.

On tour in 2008(?), running an errand on a day off in Houston during a rather large storm. Went through an intersection that turned out to have a nice low spot, deep enough to feel the resistance in a 15 pax diesel Econoline. Fried the starter solenoid, which I discovered after finishing the errand and trying to start the van. Four hours trying to get a tow, apparently I wasn't the only one. Finally flagged down a flatbed.

BizarreMan: I was expecting to see people getting stuck.

Pretty sure the first few vehicles who pulled over up the road with white smoke coming out were farked.

IF the water is shallow enough to cross, enter slowly and create a bow wave at the front of the car, keep going at a steady speed, do not stop, and do not change gear (water can get between the clutch plates).

Learned this before driving round Australia. Managed a few creek crossings, but didn't attempt to cross the 18 inches of water flowing quickly across the road on the way to some hot springs, it just wasn't worth it.

It's back slang - that odd English cant you hear sometimes that sounds almost but not entirely like words. It reverses words or syllables to make a semi-secret language. Speak it fast and it's hard to follow.

Yob is Boy, backwards.

Nah. And chav is a back-ronym. It got popular in the 1990's, but wasn't an acronym until the 2010's.
