Good. This was at least a year overdue.

Here's how Norton's defense works. It's a "bend but don't break" strategy. It's easy to move the ball on them between the 20s, but they tighten up in the red zone. They focus on taking away the deep ball and the run, and much of the time that leaves big gaps underneath. They get killed in the short passing game, especially with screen passes, and passes to tight ends. But in the red zone, those spaces get tighter and there's less room for offenses to operate; the team is good at making opponents settle for field goals and at making the occasional goal-line stand. The stats bear this out: they were 28th in yardage allowed (spending much of the season 31st or 32nd, but improving the last few weeks), but 11th in points allowed.

So, you think, "that's good right? The function of defense is to prevent points, not yards." Well, not really. The strategy meant the team would give up long, clock-consuming drives. That meant they would get killed in time of possession, and in turn, that meant (1) less time for Russ to do Russ things, and (2) the defense getting tired and unable to come up with big plays in the fourth quarter. A great example was the game in Green Bay, where the defense valiantly kept it at 3-0 for three quarters before the Packers scored two late TDs to pull away from a visibly gassed defense, missing tackles all up and down the field. And the Seahawks were unable to hold a fourth quarter lead at home against the friggin' Bears. In each of those games, the opponent possessed the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Again, the stats bear this out: that 11th-ranked scoring defense dropped to 23rd in the fourth quarter.

Also, for whatever it's worth, the defensive strategy kind of means Michael Dickson, one of the best punters in the league, is wasted on a team that so easily squanders good field position.

This was a problem for a few years, but in 2021 it became untenable. Will firing Norton fix it? I don't know. A lot of the strategy comes from Pete Carroll, who makes it pretty clear that on both sides of the ball he only cares about the running game and the deep pass. (His offense is centered around creating those things just as much as his defense is centered around stopping them; this also contributes to the time of possession problem.) But it at least gives us hope.

It's about damn time.

IMHO, Seattle needs to hire Brian Flores.

/Go Hawks.

He will land a new gig real quick and the players on whatever team hires him will be quite happy about it.

Probably.  I had to scratch my head when Miami let him go.

I hated Norton's soft coverage philosophy. They got good DBs but they were always 5 yards off every receiver, backing up too much, giving up everything underneath. And they refused to make adjustments or change schemas so before long every team had the book on them (which was like after week 2).

It was infuriating watching mediocre offenses pick their secondary apart. They made Kirk Cousins look like Joe Montana.

One of the low points of the season was in the Bears game; 3rd down and something like 12 yards to go; a receiver made a diving catch about 5 yards upfield. Ugo Amadi was seen picking daisies a few yards away. The receiver had time to get up off the ground and run for first down yardage. Amadi never even made the play; Bobby Wagner chased him down.

The 1-2 punch of drafting Dan McGwire AND Rick Mirer.

McGwire was drafted by Chuck Knox, but apparently it wasn't his fault. He wanted to draft this other guy from Southern Miss but was apparently overruled by the owner. You might have a dysfunctional organization when your owner is overruling your coach/GM on draft day.

Mirer is more understandable. A bust in retrospect, but at the time he was draft prospect 1A after Bledsoe. And it was a good thing to admit the McGwire mistake that quickly.

This being the Seahawks, we will hire Adam Gase to replace Norton and wonder why we lost to everyone but the 49ers for another 3 seasons.

Since Gase is an offensive coach, I think it's safe to say this won't happen.

Never underestimate Pete's ability to "give people an opportunity to grow."

Yeesh...I remember when they tried that with Blair Walsh.  Even all the sports psychologists at the VMAC could not fix him.
