A classic debate of good vs evil. Pro segregation or pro democracy

I assume Schumer is doing this purely to get it on the record. Otherwise there's no reason for it.

It's no longer red states and blue states, it's enslaved states and free states.

Always was. *Gun*

Either democracy is protected or the senators that fail to protect democracy are kicked out of the party and control of the Senate goes to republicans. If the Senate is going to do nothing might as well just give it officially to republicans. Manchin lied about BBB to get the grifter BIF passed so it is clear nothing good would pass the Senate anyway.

Having two traitors under the 'D' banner still helps hold off the GOP for a bit longer.  Might as well take it and hope enough can be done between now and the next election to weaken them.  Otherwise, you're just giving them a chance to start the sabotage effort for the next election right now.

Why do that?  It ain't over yet.

If you followed the Senate hijinks as closely as I do, you'd know this has nothing to do with the actual legislation or even voting records.  This is a long standing Senate tradition of trying to capture one of the members of the opposition party farting loud enough for the C-Span broadcast to pick it up.

I got $20 on Grassley.

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Chuck should try and pass a non-binding resolution in support of the idea.

The miserable farks would either have to not support the resolution, or explain why they're allowing the GOP to block the law.

right now, they're hiding behind procedural bullshiat most Americans don't even understand. And I suspect that's why Chuck won't try to embarrass them.  He doesn't care about this anymore than they do.  His senate seat is safe.

What we need to do is split off this bill into two parts.
We let Manchin and Sinema write one part with tax cuts and hand-outs to corporations.
Afterward we make them pass both bills together.
That would get them to vote for voting rights legislation.

Failing to playing to win is the biggest problem with Dem leadership. Biden should be telling Manchin if he doesn't protect democracy he will do EOs on coal and make it a mission to destroy him and coal. AZ Dem party should finish their vote to censure and kick sinema out of the AZ Dem party

He should force her to watch the original Manos on repeat until moral improves.

Prediction:
Democrats:  Make actual logical arguments using facts/data why and how we should protect voting rights for all while pointing out what is presently wrong with our system.
Republicans:  Same talking points over and over again repeating misinformation and outright lies about stealing elections and/or be completely off topic. Basically whiney biatches. Mitt will again be some sort of voice of reason and I'll feel dirty for thinking 'go Mitt'.

At least it gives me something to listen to while I'm working.

I'd go more with "enslaved" vs. "indentured" or "serfdom", really. One's clearly worse but the other is still unacceptable.

2022-01-18 11:48:24 AM
You know what would change everything?  If a couple of Republicans broke ranks and did the right thing.  Imagine if just 2 Republicans voted for this bill.

A few things would happen:  Manchin and Senima would lose their power of leverage.  And fark them.  They would be regarded as heroes by the part of the country that are not a bunch of white supremacist asshole Drumpf supporters.

Since we can't seem to change the minds of the two corrupt goofballs that are stalling this whole thing, maybe it's time to appeal to the other side.  Make the case they defying their party will work out better for them because their party is currently dying.

2022-01-18 11:48:32 AM
What's the point of this debate? Manchin and Sinema aren't going to say anything.

Then there's no reason for it. The record isn't short on mentions of evil and despicable Republican votes, and it hasn't shamed them into not being evil and despicable. They're *proud* of their evil votes.

I hope the good guys end up writing the history of all this, but the vote's symbolic value is the only value it will ever have.

The point of this vote isn't to pass it.

The point is to shame those who didn't pass it, so they can go back to their constituents and explain why they didn't vote for the bill that would have stopped them from rigging elections that keep them in power

I'd so much rather the Dems go down swinging.

If the Republicans can hold 30+ hearings on Benghazi... The Dems can hold 30+ votes on doing the right thing (or at least starting to do the right thing)

Yet a surprising number of people still haven't gotten the memo and consistently come out on the side of evil.

No one's going to vote for a bill that directly disadvantages them in elections.

You might as well try and pass a bill that reduces Congress' salaries by 30%.

A safe bet, considering his colleagues call him Senator Gassley behind his back.

Well, not literally behind his back, because that's where the atmosphere is, err, thickest, so to speak, but out of his hearing anyway.

You mean the people who elected them in the first place? They'll cheer and toss their hats in the air and be energized. Perhaps you mean the people they don't give a shiat about, whose votes will be tossed or ignored anyway? They'll post angry and sarcastic memes but that's all.

That depends on the basis of partial ordering of comparisons implicit to "as well", and more critically how exhaustively enumerative a set of options that you consider.

That's one point. Another may be to show a decent respect to the opinions of mankind through exhausting all ordinary means of peaceable petition for redress of grievances before determining whether to appeal the lack of redress through continuation of politics by extraordinary means.

And watch Joe instantly switch parties like the WV governor did. Whether or not it is enough, there are still things moving on the Senate side. If nothing else, simply the ability to confirm judicial nominations is the reason to not drop below 50-50.

Manchin isn't going to switch parties - stop being scared of what he might do and be concerned about what will happen if you let him control the party.
