Open riots in Belarus and K-stan and now Putin wants to use some false flag BS to invade Ukraine in an ill-fated attempt to get the USSR band back together.

Biden doesn't want to engage preferring to work on resetting US-China relations

Western diplomats operating with an "empty toolbag".

Charming.

Only part of that article that raised my eyebrows was that K-stan produced 50% of the world's nuclear materials 2019.

Knew about the oil and gas but that part I didn't know.

I've said this on other forums but i'll say it again here.

Putin is a Chaotic Evil (like in AD&D) Chaos Monkey. instead of working on improving his own country, he's trying to dear down other peoples'. He's effing w our democracies, he's effing with our institutions, hes a leader of a rogue state.

Why isnt he handled more roughly than he is? Russia is a regional power. Granted, a nuclear one, but none the less: a regional power. Russia and its clients would not be able to withstand full blown sanctions or heavy hits from the west.

His govt is responsible for disinformaiton and misinformation campaigns the world over and is actively trying to subvert other govts from Europe to the USA.

We should be actively trying to take his shiat down the way mossad is constantly taking down Iran's reactor. We, the West, need to be actively going after his troll farms and misinformation campaigns, from covid to the elections the russians are messing with all of it and need to be put in their place.

Why isnt he taken more seriously and handled more roughly?

"Handled more roughly" like...?

like, treated like the rogue leader he is?
sanctioned?
not given the photo ops grinning with US presidents?
treated more like Iran or North Korea?
Actively condemned by western leaders to GTFO of our elections?
Freezing Russian access to Facebook marketing disinformation campaigns?
Arming the Ukrainians to the teeth?
Doing more to support the protest in Byelorussia?

presumably things are going down behind closed doors but i'd like The West to be a bit more .... blatant about it.

2fardownthread: Not a great article. More of a reminder to everyone that the US is getting overextended in trying to fight more and more fires that have been allowed to pop up.

The "opposition" had a free run from about 2016 in just about every arena and dimension you could name. Biden has probably been shoring things up, but it does not put a stop to the pressure from Russia and China. The pressure will increase this election year. Count on it. And we will get another round of grumbling and saber rattling from Russia and China in 2024.

This is going to go on for a while. If we are lucky, that is.

Ukraine and Kazakhstan are very different. Ukraine is an ally that is being threatened by a foreign state. It's a situation in which we are able, and expected, to offer help. Kazakhstan is an unfolding humanitarian crisis in a country with which we have tenuous relations. Regardless of how tragic the outcome may end up becoming, it's a situation which we can only make worse with our involvement, not better.

Just for an example against the overextension argument, if Putin opened up a new front against Estonia tomorrow, you can bet that we would respond.

..uh. because when the grumbling stops, the shooting starts, obviously.

The good news is that Kazakhstan shows that Russia and China have their own problems keeping their vassals under control. This is the problem with empires.

/ BTW, I have not seen any off the hook anti-American protests in a long time. Anyone else noticed that?
// We are living in an era of national protests and needy client states. Not a great time to be building empires.
