The former president's impulses were his undoing. Has he learned his lesson?

If he learned lessons he wouldn't be TFG.

2022-01-17 10:44:42 PM
You mean he can go down ramps now?

2022-01-17 10:46:24 PM
Unless he's had some miraculous brain regeneration or transplant, not possible.  His neurological impairment is progressive and already noticeable.  The term that most easily applies is "sundowning" and there are video examples from 2017-2019.

The drugs they're giving him may give him a bump, but he's in a serious declining prognosis. Old, Covid brain, seriously overweight. I expect and hope he succumbs on the crapper. A fitting end.

2022-01-17 10:52:20 PM
He hasn't

2022-01-17 10:58:43 PM
We might be faced in future by a smarter evil grifter who uses elements of the Trump approach.  We will never, ever, see a smarter version of Trump himself, as most here have already noted.

I'd rather see him have an aneurysm while screaming at one of his rallies.

If we're doing imponderables, I'd rather think about what would happen if Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh showed up naked at my front door and demanded a threesome.

Because that's more likely than the Fanta Menace getting smarter.

Here's the thing:

A theoretical smart Trump wouldn't do any of the brazen things dumb Trump did because he'd be too aware of the ramifications. He'd be more cautious and scrupulous, and less unwilling to do many of the things necessary to seize and maintain power because he'd be too cognizant of the consequences. His ability to think ahead and plan, and his fear of getting caught and losing everything, would dissuade him from any coarse actions.

In effect, it is Trump's woeful ignorance and stupidity that enables him to do such brazenly unlawful things in the first place because he quite simply does not know how unlawful they are. Nor does he care. It's the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance applied to political strategy. By not understanding nor comprehending the ramifications, Trump is liberated from the extreme consequences of his own decision-making, able to move, think and act almost as pure id, motivated by a selfish desire for power and damn any law, rule, or person who tries to stop him. A smart Trump wouldn't behave this way.

In a similar vein: What if Trump shows up at the Winter Olympics and wins the women's figure skating gold?

Then that would be the sort of personal growth that he hasn't seen in over 60 years.

Now then, will the people who are cheating the system for him going to learn? THAT is a far more pertinent question.

2022-01-18 7:16:28 AM
He hasn't. If anything he's learned the GOP will permit him to act on his impulses with impunity.

2022-01-18 7:17:37 AM
It's amazing that after a year of Trump being gone we're still getting articles about how he's finally becoming presidential.

2022-01-18 7:19:51 AM
Ain't gonna happen.

lol imagine thinking this guy is capable of any kind of self-reflection and learning from past experiences.

Pretty sure he still can't open doors with those tiny hands.

Well we did finally get infrastructure week

The expectation: what if the Trump clan became smart and competent?!

The reality: "Oh my God, why is Clippy eavesdropping on what I write?!"

I could totally see a little girl, that he's stalking, getting away by distracting him with a reflective surface. Is that what you mean?

2022-01-18 7:23:27 AM
I doubt he can spell 'smarter'.

2022-01-18 7:24:57 AM
Old dog learn new tricks?
Likely not.
Found this one fun. .

"His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is making noises about replacing McConnell with somebody more friendly to the once and perhaps future president."

My guess is that would end up like the time Cheney was put in charge of deciding who W's VP would be.

2022-01-18 7:24:58 AM
Being worried about a smart Trump is the wrong approach.

What y'all should really be worried about is how effective fascists are at spreading their ideas despite their apparent stupidness, because we keep underestimating how much we legitimize their ideas by simply giving them a platform to speak.

2022-01-18 7:26:01 AM
You can't teach an old dickhead new tricks.

2022-01-18 7:26:08 AM
Irrespective of the question being asked, I just want to say here that I predict a key last minute reconciliation between Trump and DeSantis prior to a critical upcoming election. And when it happens I suspect it will be the result of careful planning beforehand.

Trump won't be "gone" until he's finally rotting in the ground. And I can't f*cking WAIT.

Sorry, the princess is in another castle.

He's got a long way to go still just to get up to "dumb".

He'll be standing there clutching at the podium, angrily barking with his face turning red, suddenly the side of his face will start drooping as his words start to come out even more jumbled than usual. Then he'll fall down and spend fifteen years in a vegetative state.

My fondest dream.

No. He should suffer an episode and suffer from Locked In syndrome. After a good decade, then he can pass. A decade of him raging, unable to communicate, will be the barest tip of the scale of toward payment.

A smart Trump would no longer be Trump, so by definition no.

It's not just the charismatic leader we have to watch, though.

It turns out many of the protections built into the system of government we thought would serve as checks on tyranny were pretty much handshake agreements.

This has not gone unnoticed by the old grey men who'd love to seize power.

No, there isn't any one unified conspiracy to undermine American democracy. Some want money, some power, some are religious zealots and ideologues, some just want the world to burn.

But all of them want our democratic, pluralistic (such as it is) system to fall, to be replaced by something more easily controlled, less tolerant of dissent, while maintaining a facade of freedumb and liberty.

And by testing the limits, TFG gave them a pretty good idea of how it can be accomplished.

The media really, really wants him to run.

It wouldn't matter. He's already very canny in terms of Republican idiocy. He knew a responsible approach to Covid would turn off his followers, for example.

But to act with actual intelligence would also turn them off. Look at Ted Cruz. He's av actually intelligent person who constantly takes stupid positions because he has to.

That's just cruel. To the world. We can't wait that long to pay our respects. Our bladders would rupture!

I think Republicans will happily vote for a vegetable. Breaking the USA and making the libs cry are the only things they stand for.

The question of whether or not Trump has learned from his mistakes is not as important as the question of what the GOP and all the Trump 2.0 wannabes out there have learned from his mistakes.

Reconciliation... careful planning... Trump...

Something about these words just don't make sense when put together.

I hope Biden or whoever the president is at the time doesn't have a honorable funeral for him and say nice things. Boy that will be vomit-worthy if that happens.

They speculated about this while he was running,

They speculating about this while he was in office,

Apparently they will speculate about it until he literally goes to jail and cannot run for a second term or actually runs

Biden should speak at his funeral and brag about how he won.

You seem to be unaware of the direction American politics is taking/heading.  Let me
clarify that for you.
