Legendary Les. "Screw the Miami Heat -- and the horse that rode in on them!"

Les was a treasure. I loved listening to his show when I had an overnight gig several years ago. The way he could recall the most mundane things that happened in games he covered decades ago was incredible.

Some callers would obviously troll him but it seemed like he took everyone seriously. He almost refused to hang up on someone no matter how stupid their take was.

I haven't been able to listen to him regularly for years, but it sucks knowing I'll never be able to catch a few segments if I happen to be up late.

I don't know how well known he is outside of the Chicago area, but he was a legend and seemed like a genuinely super nice guy. The stories all the AM670 hosts were telling yesterday about their experiences with him had me rolling.

RIP Grobber

If you've ever enjoyed listening to Lee Elia's profane rant about Cubs fans, you can thank Grobber, who recorded it.. And I learned yesterday he was the one who disproved the New Orleans media report that Jim McMahon called the women of New Orleans slots before the Bears Super Bowl.

Sluts, not slots. Works either way, I guess.

I didn't realize what an institution the guy was in Chicago until I moved here.  Sad news.  His colleagues seemed to think a lot of him.

Les once had a caller try to tell him that Jeremy Lin was better than Michael Jordan, but Les was having none of it. Unfortunately I can't find the audio of the call (it used to be on YouTube), but it was one of the most hilarious things at the time.

/Les deserved a better headline too

One that I'm pretty sure is still on YouTube is when someone told him Pluto was being declassified as a planet and he took it personally like his family had been insulted or something. Quirky guy. Legendary career as a reporter. He'll be missed.

I remember a Pete from Baltimore having some ridiculous takes like that. That guy used to say John Wall was better than Jordan so it wouldn't surprise me if he would say a guy on the Knicks was better than Jordan to really aggravate Les. I mean, you just knew some of these guys calling in were trolling Les and probably laughing their ass off at how long they'd get to be on the air with their nonsense.

Which reminds me of some of his other more well known callers. I wonder if Bittersweet Jeff ("ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!") or Tom from "Hangover" Park (some old dude that always sounded completely annihilated) are still out there somewhere. Even Tim from Racine (some guy constantly calling the Milwaukee station) used to call Les almost every night.

Here it is, from Boers and Bernstein the next day. One of the classic moments of the show. I really liked Adam as his producer.
