Or the meaning of "patriotism."

There's something quite sick about a bunch of republicans demanding someone else recite the pledge of allegiance, not that long after they themselves tried to burn America down and replace it with a fascist dictatorship.

another bill that won't make it out of committee.

I have a friend who teaches here in Iowa.
She told me the Pledge is done every morning over the intercom.
Both teachers and students can do what they want as long as they aren't disruptive.
She told me bout 1/3 of the students stand and recite it.
She does sometimes, if she isn't busy doing other things class related.

A flag is a graven image. Jesus told us to not to swear an oath to graven images.

I certainly hope it doesn't (make it out of committee).  Is there any state in this country that isn't rapidly heading down the drain?

I asked my daughter and she looked at me like I'd grown a second head.  We didn't do it after elementary school, and that ended in the early 90's for me.

I have mixed feelings on it.

On one hand, it seems a little creepy and faschy.

On the other, other than the Undergod nonsense, there's nothing really disagreeable, and a lot of good there.

Our European cousins, scarred by the ravages of nationalism run unchecked, understandably bristle at it.  The thing is, it's actually a measure against regional nationalism.  I wish more people believed in preserving an indivisible republic, with liberty and justice for all.

Fark that shiat. By the time I got to high school, somebody just read it over the PA in homeroom and we all ignored it.

F*ck that. The United States needs to pledge allegiance to its citizens

Back in high school I was taking some kind of AP civics or government course. There was a dude in the class that went by Puck, and was about as punk rock as you could get in gulf coast Mississippi in the mid-90s. One day he opted to not stand for the Pledge. This resulted in a debate of basically the entire class (less the teacher, who knew he didn't have to stand and quite frankly didn't care if he did or not) kind of trying to cajole/berate the dude into standing. I'm sure I even got in on it. "C'mon, Puck. It's 30 seconds. You can pretend to be patriotic for 30 seconds. Just do it." That sort of thing. His argument for sitting basically boiled down to that he didn't feel like this was his country and it wasn't deserving of his respect, which is fair.

If I had I time machine, I would go back in time, walk into the class, smack myself for participating, and tell everyone, mainly myself, to leave the dude alone.

Anyways, this Iowa Senator dude is an idiot.

New Rule. People advocating for The Pledge to be mandatory have to write the whole things out, perfectly, with correct spelling and punctuation or else self-immolate.

When I was in high school in the 1970s, some busybody found out we weren't doing the Pledge daily. State law apparently required students had to "be given the opportunity" to say the Pledge. So midway through my junior year, we started standing during first period. Our teacher - this was a physics class - pointed out that there was no comma between "one Nation" and "under God" and we shouldn't pause at that point. So for the rest of the year, we recited it "onenationundergod."

If I were a teacher in Iowa, and this somehow became law, my first lesson would be a detailed history of the Pledge of Allegiance so the kids all know that "under God" was added in 1954.

Actually, it's a pledge to the flag ___of_the_United_States_of_America___  , which makes it even more stupid.
You're pledging to a symbol (and to what it supposedly stands for).

The elevation of a symbol in this way is idolatry which is something forbidden by many religions.
This sets up an obvious conflict if you interpret the 1st amendment to grant sufficient freedom of religion such that you can't be forced to do most things that would violate your religion.

Now try to explain this to those who advocate for the pledge as a mandatory requirement.

2022-01-17 8:12:44 PM
Consider a slightly different requirement, same amendment. What if they required you to read a Koran verse whether you happen to be a Muslim or not? Exactly the same constitutional problem.

There is no "liberty and justice for all". It's a bunch of crap. School kids shouldn't be forced to recite it.

Worse, he more or less verbally diagrammed the sentence. In hindsight, I think he was being a little subversive. He probably knew what high school kids would do.

It never really hits you as a kid, but making a bunch of kids pledge their allegiance is some Orwellian shiat.

I once had on old-timer get angry at me for not reciting the pledge, even though I was standing respectfully.

"I'm not a US citizen. That isn't my flag."

The pledge of allegiance is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. A bunch of idiots train their kids to be unquestioningly loyal to the place they were born.

I was  born in a cult and even though I left almost 30 years ago, I am proud to say that I have never in my life said the pledge of allegiance.

Fascists love petty displays of nationalism, they're just not big on supporting the values of the nation they claim to love.

New England is generally OK.  We obviously suffer from the same economic issues that are throughout the country and world -- wages not rising to keep pace with increasing expenses, as well as rapidly increasing housing costs -- but generally the goosesteppers are minimal in this part of the world or at least have minimal influence.

I spent only 2 years in public school (during the early 70s) and always stood during the PoA, but never did the hand over the heart thing, nor recited it. It has nothing to do with the words of the Pledge, I agree wholeheartedly with them, but I do see the daily repetition as indoctrination, "rote patriotism", if you will , and it has a nasty totalitarian scent to it that I strongly dislike.
