"That's actually what I first thought when I saw my license plate stolen - was that my license plate is now is going to be used for a crime and they're going to come looking for me."

But you didn't report it until after that outcome happened.

"I also don't think we should get numb to this. This type of behavior and lawlessness is not okay," Lyons said. "I understand we live in a city and things happen in a city, but we've crossed a line. And we need to be aware of what's going on and we need to speak up."

Yes this is just the worst crime going on in all of the city, you are suffering so very much.

Don't you understand? Crime isn't supposed to happen to them!  What kind of world is it when thieves steal from rich white people?  It's utter lawlessness at that point!  Something must be done!

It's the republican mantra: nothing matters unless it starts affecting me personally.

New? I'd bet there's still a VW Beetle with stolen plates from the 1970s in that city.

/ Forgot where I parked it.

What about thieves that break into the car AND take the license plates?

Why is nobody concerned about this dual menace?

some nations outside the USA have plates issued cradle to grave instead of new owner, new plates. with permanent plates you could use locking hardware. one more irritating crime thwarted. but nooooooo. this is why we can't have nice things.

Not exactly sure what you mean by that.  They just stay with the car forever?  How's that work if you move to another state?

You might remember me from such crimes as license plate theft and chiropracty without a license.

So catch a much more serious charge of license plate theft to avoid paying for parking? Seems the risk/reward ratio is a bit off there.

A bit risky if you get stopped..."licence and registration, please..."
"...uhh...well, you see..."

What?  How did that plate get there?  Someone must have switched it out with mine and is racking up tickets.  Neighborhood is going to shiat, I tell ya.

This is new(s)? Plates have been stolen since some one forgot to pay for his first one in 189tysomething!

Plate theft is back up because printer ink is so expensive for the fake temp plates.

Yes, the number plate is registered with the car and doesn't change until paperwork is submitted to change it.

If you move to a different state/country then you normally have a grace period of a number of months to get the paperwork sorted. So if you move from New South Wales to South Australia then you have to send of the forms to get a new SA number plate. If you move within the EU then the grace period is six months.

Hell, in plenty of countries number plates are made by your local parts shop to government regs and you don't have to worry about dealing with a deliberately underfunded government agency. My car at home is ten years old and still has the same number as the day it was sold and is only on the 2nd physical plate due to damage to the first one.

Good luck contesting the tickets. I wager serious money they just tell you that you still owe them.

Seems like the electronic handheld parking ticket printer thingys should scan the VIN when a ticket is issued. That could settle the "It wasn't my car!" arguments.

Nations that do this have national registration and issuance of plates, not done on a state/province/whatever level. Moving to a new area means you still have plates issued by the country.

In California the plates stay with the car generally. But why steal real plates? If it only needs to fool a camera, why not just print one?

I don't know if tickets are physically put on the car by a human or if they are just mailed after a drive by where the camera computer thinks it's a violation. If hand issued by a human, that's their obligation to ensure a plate is authentic.

Soon to be seen: neighborhood businesses are torn down to provide locked parking garages.
