Mario 3 and Ice Hockey, probably. Kung Fu was pretty great, although I always sucked at it.

Such an overlooked classic; it's one of the first I grab any time I'm doing NES emulation. I keep promising myself to one day write a new and updated version of it, but I honestly can't figure out how to improve on it other than maybe a team designer.

My brother and I played it so much that we created a spreadsheet of all the stats for all the teams, and put in weighting to see what team is the best. Interestingly, it was India (Swami + Blaster) and Japan (Sato + Blaster) that were our favorites.

Played a shiat ton of games on that. I had all the usual ones, but my dad and I would go to the pawn shop down the street every few months and see what they had. Two I remember most are Jaws (actually beat that one) and Monster Party, which was fairly terrifying for a young kid. Never actually beat that one, but I remember looking at the ending of it and it was a pretty messed up ending as well!

I recall buying this game, which was a single copy in a case at a drug store. Very underrated late-era NES game. Zelda II gone weirder; difficult, but strangely, better streamlined.

I recall a few times I let people borrow it, and they ended up hunting for a copy to buy it.

Also, no one could agree on how to pronounce its name.

I'd say the Mega Man games are those that hold up best. They're just as playable today as they were back then.

I also have a very soft spot for Base Wars, but it had too many flaws to be part of the top list.

Always loved Mario Bros series, hardcore! Battletoads and Duckhunt and Dr. Mario as a kid. Muppet Babies and Ducktales, every Ninja Turtle game rocked my fuggin' world!

Yo Noid stuck out to me as a lad and I still fondly remember that difficult yet oddly charming platformer. Shadowgate is full of fond memories of puzzle/problem solving with my younger step-sibs. As an adult I have spent dozens of hours on Wario's Woods, an addictive puzzle game that helps me relax and calm my raging brains.

As an aside, my cousin had an NES game she and I LOVED but her brother hated, would hide from us and eventually got rid of, it was a 4 in one game with different play style games and a lil switch on back of the cartridge to choose which game. #1 was a cartoony platformer and #3 was like underwater scrubbing bubble jellyfish or somesuch. Woulda been round '91 when I witnessed this unicorn, and I've never been able to find anything on it online or otherwise.

Wonder if my cousin even recalls it...

At the time it was current:

Magic Kingdom
Duck Hunt
Any Mario
Dr. Mario
The weird Mario where Luigi was there and it played similar to Zelda 2
A game with a wand, can't remember it but it was fun.

Now: FF1. Great game, way too good to be on NES.

Blades of Steel and RBI Baseball both had tremendous replayability. Like, once I beat SMB, I could always beat it - remembering years later where the secrets were, etc. But I could pick up Blades of Steel right now and have a fun and challenging game.

I only have an incredibly vague memory of how these games played... actually, before looking it up, I only remembered that there was a Robin Hood game in there, and as all unlicensed games, it was actually kinda sucky.

What I do distinctly remember though, is renting this when I was a kid, which was somehow a big deal. The next day, my friend/neighbor absolutely refused to believe me, so I invited him home after school to show him, only to find out my mom had returned it during the day.

/I got over it, but man, some random memories have a way of coming up out of seemingly nowhere.

Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode was pretty fun. I liked the way it switched between play modes, side-scroll, first-person, flying, sniping... It was far from perfect but ambitious and mature for those days.

Apologies to my fellow farkers, I dont know how to multi-reply.

Yes they were clunky as hell compared to more invested games, that's why her brother hated them so. We, however, found them charming despite the faults.

Man, sounds like we two have the same kind of luck...!

Also helped me solve a second NES mystery! No one remembers F-16 Renegade and this is why! I Misremembered it as a separate game when it was in with this set all along.

I remembered this way back as something from early gamerhood, and have spent at least 13 years trying to find this link to my past. Thank you to both detectives!

Almost everything by Konami was fantastic.

Hell, an argument could made that Konami was the 2nd greatest game publisher of all-time, with Nintendo being first, probably. Personally, I enjoyed Konami games more than Nintendo games. Nintendo can never not be "cute" (with very rare exceptions), which isn't my thing.

Glad to have helped. I know exactly what this feeling is. I must have also spent something like 15 years trying to remember a show from a vague memory of seeing it a few times at my grandparent's house (they had cable and we didn't). Nobody seemed to know that show about a real-life band that was sucked in a cartoon world. When I was well into my 20's, I finally decided to spend the better part of an evening combing through a list of 80's cartoons and finally found it. (It was Kidd Video. I knew I didn't imagine it!)
