You know, with how super subs are as a strike force, im willing to bet the ohio is not the top of the line boomer these days. The next gen of subs would be the most important military secret to keep out of all the types of combat vehicles, and its probably already been built and is in service. Not columbia class but better and completely kept from prying eyes

The actual Ohio has been through at least one major overhaul.  As in taken out of service for 2 years at a time.  Partially to incorporate improvements that were implemented on the later examples of the class, partially to give it completely new mission capabilities.  Off the top of my head, I think that includes changing out all the ballistic missile launchers to handle long-distance cruise missiles instead.

Pretty sure they did similar things to the Los Angeles-class attack submarines to put in quarters for special forces and a mini-sub hangar for covert insertion missions.

Commercially available Tethys-class research drones can go about 1800km without needing a refill, and they're 10 years old.

not to be a killjoy here not the ohio class is 560ft long and 18750 tons.
the columbia class are going to be about the same

the 'secret' part of submarines is the stuff inside them.  the systems and electronics.  its incredibly unlikely that there are entire hulls out there sailing around that are unknown.  that would basically require there to be secret shipyards somewhere to build them - and that sort of thing is kind of noticeable.

Sure - maybe before we captured that Klingon Bird of Prey and stole their cloaking technology but things are different now.

"Strategic visit"  More likely a medical emergency or they were really, really bad and get to spend a week or six in Guam as punishment.  Happened to my attack boat back in the '70s.  We're talking about a place you can walk from end to end the long way in a day.

You'd be wrong. When the Ohio class was developed and built, it basically set the floor for noise/stealth. Ohio subs are literally "empty holes in the water" that can't be tracked.

The Columbia class will add a couple nice things:
1. Electric drive. Rather than having steam turbines turn a propulsion shaft through reduction gearing (expensive to build & maintain, and then it is a path for noise leaks) the turbine will drive an alternator. Electric power generated will then turn a large electric propulsion motor, in addition to powering various other things on the boat.
2. Pump-jet propulsor. The electric motor will drive a pump jet instead of turning a propellor. This is more quiet than prior drive systems using propellors.

Make-believe war (and small-scale, localized battles) are what keep the big boys from having it out. Proving our weapons were superior to theirs was absolutely crucial to keep Ivan from pulling the trigger on a war he couldn't win.

That and training, training, training. We drill constantly, and the only people that could really match us (during the Cold War) were the Brits. The USSR was within 5-10% of US sub capability, partially due to stealing advanced technology. I'll wager China is right there as well. Our advantage is the training and maintenance.

We also play with a handicap most of the time... we intentionally don't operate as quietly as we can operate much of the time. Why? To f**k with people.

War machine aside , our work on submersibles has resulted in a lot of really good scientific work. Work that I find rather important as we as a species explore the depths of the ocean which as you know or may not know cover about 75% of the planet and a good deal of it is unexplored a lot can be done with drones, but still there's a lot of work a lot of science and overall that also helps us for things non-terrestrial and I'll leave it at that.

Movements of the 14 boomers in the US Navy's fleet are usually closely guarded secrets.

I'm not surprised. Those little punks probably bully them non-stop, just like they do here.

The sentiment is compassionate, but the DoD budget in general, and the Ohio Class budget line specifically, is not stopping that from happening

Demand more Mercy-class ships then.  They like to convert supertankers and it's a quick way to up the total tonnage.  Just don't ask the air force since they tend to create cargo cults.

There is no argument from me on that front. None. I think we ( as a species ) can do both , at the same time , if things were better. By better I mean for betterment of the species / planet . I can pull the trigger , so to speak , right now , on making sure everyone has a good meal, but I need a few billion dollar pounds backing my play. And I work for cheap.
