So does this mean South Dakota is no longer worst Dakota?

Yup. Dakota Prescott official takes the crown!

I was reading something tonight about how McCarthy has been pushing this narrative the entire season, and it's clearly a cover for how undisciplined the team is under him. Maybe you were the most penalized team this season and postseason not because of some grand conspiracy to push the most profitable team in the NFL out of the playoffs but because you are a shiatty head coach whose shiatty attitude and abilities has infected the rest of the team.

The fake punt was a little odd also, the ref seemingly blocked them from running a play.

It's odd and I admittedly don't know the why's, but in some college and pro games the refs hover in that spot slowing down plays and other times the get in and out right away

The ref has to give the defense time to make substitutions.

Last I checked, a football game is 60 minutes in length.
If you're upset because you didn't win it after only playing 5 minutes of it, I hardly care.

That's what I figured, then Aaron Rodgers does that fast snap stuff catching 12 men while they are trying to sub sometimes

As I understand it, they only have to allow time for a defensive substitution if the offense also makes a substitution.  If they don't, it's up to the defense to get off the field in time if they sub.

Dak decided to run up the middle instead of going out of bounds to stop the clock. How is that the ref's fault?

My coworker said it best. "That's the most Cowboy play I've ever seen."

If the offense makes a substitution, the defense has to be given the opportunity to 1) see what those subs are and 2) react to them by subbing their own personnel. This usually means 10-15 seconds. If the offense does NOT sub, then if the defense wants to, it's at their own risk (sometimes being caught with 12 players on the field, or not being ready for the play).

At the end of the game, the error on the part of the Cowboys was Dak not handing the ball directly to the umpire so it could be spotted (and the umpire was hauling ass to try and make it happen). Instead the Cowboys spotted it themselves in a rush to get the spike in, and started to get set, leading to the umpire having to push through them. The officials spot the ball, not the players - that's a requirement. That's entirely on the Cowboys - if Dak hands the ball to the umpire, they get the spike off.

Cowboys tried to get cute and failed. The ref did his job so the offense doesn't get an unfair advantage by running an entire group of personnel on the field at the last second without allowing the defense to substitute in the correct matchups.

The refs in the NFL have been brutal all year, but they weren't the problem today. The Cowboys were.

Even the penalties against them were the right calls. Can't say that about a lot of games this weekend.

even Romo agreed with all the calls and dang they even reversed the spot on the 49ers play that would have ended the game right then.  these are professional football players they should know the rules and that  ref has to touch the ball has been that way after every play in every NFL game since I can remember.

Lol the fake punt one...if Dallas didn't dick around for 20+ seconds acting like they were gonna run another play with special teams they'd have been fine.

Once again their fault for being idiots.

/tbh I would've loved it if they had the punter throw another pass

The wait had nothing to do with personnel changes.  the ball had to be swapped out.  There are certain balls designated specifically for kicking plays.  The ball needed to be swapped for a non-K ball before the next play could take place.

The way Dallas tried to get "cute" was by keeping the entire punt team on the field (with no substitutions) in order to get another play off quickly.  With the ball change required, the attempt was dead before it started.

I saw the game and the Cowboys lost because they played like sh*t for most of the game and only played well in the last five or six minutes of the 4th quarter.

They had 14 penalties called against them in the game, some of them extended 49er drives. It makes it much harder to win if you shoot yourself in the foot with all those penalties.

The plays the offense ran were just plain dumb. Wasting all that time by leaving the punt team on the field wasted time they could have used in the end. Why have Prescott run in the middle of the field when he should have tried to run out of bounds to stop the clock? And the ref on the field has to set the ball on the field for it to be official. Stupid mistakes that they shouldn't have made.

Why would football fans simply assume their team was going to execute a 23 yard touchdown pass and extra point to end the game?  From their 14 penalties, 5 punts, a failed 4th down and a field goal it seems more appropriate to look into those drives for bullsh*t they failed to do that would have created a better outcome.

That is correct.

If the defense is tired and wants to make a substitution, the offense can decide to quickly go to the line and try to run a quick play (either to catch them with 12 players... OR to just catch them not being ready).  So long as they (the offense) have the same personnel, they can snap it as soon as it's spotted and the ref moves into position.

Peyton Manning also did that IIRC (as well as being amazing at the hard count).  Course, he, like Kaaron, liked to run the no-huddle so you're already kinda doing that anyway.  But you can always impromptu no-huddle quick snap to catch 'em off guard.

/Honestly, I don't know why more teams don't do that.  If the defense shows even the slightest sign of lolligagging on substituting if they're tired, hold off on substituting, run to the line, get a quick play off.  It's the pros so most teams practice proper substitution to prevent that I'm sure, but I still imagine there's a lot of situations it would come in handy to quick snap and most teams choose not to.

The story of America's team is hilarious:

The Steelers were offered by the NFL to be "America's Team" in the late 70s, a sort of promotional thing. Rooney said "fark you, the Steelers are Pittsburgh's team not America's". So they floated the idea around to other successful 70s squads and Dallas said yes. Long after the promotion ended, and...well you know how Cowboys fans are...

Did you miss the part at about 19 seconds to go in the play clock where the entire offense ran on to the field as the special teams unit ran off?

The local news in Dallas, at least the NBC station didn't show how the game ended in the recap. The did show how the fans think next year will be their year, though.

Also, if you think the refs were a factor and made bad calls, approving of fans throwing garbage at them probably isn't going to be the best tactic to change that.

2022-01-17 9:42:25 AM
My team got spanked Saturday, but at least we got spanked with dignity.  ::grumble grumble::

This current story is a tempest in a teapot.  One or two fans acted dumb, that's really quite good in the scheme of things.  The player who deflected a water bottle from hitting him in the face, and said it was directed at the refs, was some serious denial chucklefest territory.  Prescott, building on that and agreeing with blaming the refs was just embarrassing.

You lose all right to whine about the final seconds when you run a fake punt followed up by a clock killing fake fake punt, with a "surprise" personnel shift en mass at the last second... when the other team wasn't remotely fooled and in fact had their correct defense on the field all prepared like.

That fake fake punt was right up there with the Indy illegal formation fake punt, where they actually snapped the ball, for all time dumb trick plays.

Is the Indianapolis Colts' trick play the worst in NFL history?
