Jimi Hendrix even wrote a song about how he wished he had her singing voice, and about when he though he could attain it:

I always associate that song with Roy Scheider dying.

I'm sure the younger generations can't even imagine how multi-faceted entertainers like her were ever popular, but the world is a much duller place without them.

She was the very definition of the term "broad" - a voice like thunder & a good sense of humour about herself.

From Wiki:
Profanity
Merman was notorious for her brash demeanor and for telling vulgar stories at public parties.

While rehearsing a guest appearance on The Loretta Young Show, Merman exclaimed "Where the hell does this go?" Young, who was a devout Catholic, advanced towards her waving an empty coffee can, saying "Come on, Ethel. You know my rules. That'll cost you a dollar." To which Merman replied "Tell me, Loretta, how much will it cost me to tell you to go fark yourself?"

Which should have been a sign of the need for an intervention. Though I don't know that interventions were a thing then.

I find her voice grating, and she insists upon herself...

It's always a joy learning some old time entertainer was not only a pretty good actor but could sing and dance and do a few other tricks too.
